Why we love this

Kinyon understands what beginning bands need: strong harmonic support, straightforward rhythmic patterns, and genuine musical character. This march delivers bombast without complexity, letting every student feel the thrill of playing something that sounds impressive and celebratory from the very first rehearsal.

What to expect

March Madness channels pure celebration and forward momentum. The writing is direct and exuberant, with bold harmonic progressions and athletic rhythms that capture the spirit of competition and crowd energy without demanding sophisticated technique from players.

Who it's for

This is ideal for beginning concert bands and middle school programs looking for accessible, high-energy material. It works equally well for non-traditional contexts like pep band performances, athletic events, or assembly programs where impact and morale matter more than technical complexity.

How to get the most out of it

  • Emphasize clean articulation in the brass section to project that stadium-ready sound; even at Grade 1, crisp attacks define the march character.
  • Balance the snare drum and bass drum parts so the percussion drives the energy forward without masking the melodic content.
  • Keep a steady, confident tempo throughout; marches thrive on unwavering pulse and conviction.

How to use it

Open a concert or sporting event with this piece to set a festive, energized tone. It also works well as a warm-up number early in the rehearsal season, building confidence in young players and establishing marching fundamentals before tackling more intricate repertoire.

Skills your students will build

  • Sustaining steady tempo and ensemble pulse
  • Clear, coordinated articulation in mixed instrumentation
  • Reading simple rhythmic figures in common meters
  • Balancing volume and projection across the full band
