His works appear regularly on state and national contest lists, and ensembles worldwide perform his music in concert halls from Carnegie Hall to the Sydney Opera House. Beyond composition, Sheldon co-authored Sound Innovations for Concert Band and has earned recognition from the American School Band Director's Association, Phi Beta Mu, and ASCAP for his contributions to wind music.

As a clinician and guest conductor, Sheldon works extensively with All-State and Regional Honor Bands across the United States and internationally in Japan, Canada, Italy, Germany, Australia, and China. His prolific output includes commissioned works and numerous annual publications for concert band. VanderCook College of Music awarded him an honorary doctorate in 2020, acknowledging his impact on music education and the art form.
