Portnoy's setting captures the weight and wonder of this text with straightforward musicality that lets the words land. The piece avoids overwrought gestures, instead using harmonic clarity and vocal balance to create genuine emotional presence.
What to expect
There is reverence here without sentimentality. The music inhabits a contemplative space, unfolding with the gravity of witnessing something essential. Four voices move in concert toward moments of quiet affirmation.
Who it's for
This octavo works well for SATB choirs seeking secular repertoire with liturgical resonance. It suits ensembles that value clarity and text comprehension over technical display.
How to get the most out of it
Shape the phrases around the natural breath points in the text; Portnoy's phrasing follows speech rhythm rather than arbitrary bar groupings.
Balance the upper voices carefully in passages where soprano and alto diverge, ensuring the alto line remains audible without pushing.
Attend to vertical sonority on longer notes; even in simple passages, slight adjustments to individual voice projection shift the harmonic color noticeably.
How to use it
Pair this with other secular sacred works to explore themes of human experience and meaning. It sits naturally in a program exploring texts about life passages or existential reflection, holding its own among both classical and contemporary settings.
Skills your students will build
Singing sustained harmonic structures with tonal steadiness
Balancing SATB voicing when lines move independently
Executing clean diction on longer note values
Shaping phrases according to textual meaning rather than mechanical phrasing
