About the Arranger: Donald Moore

Donald Moore earned his Bachelor of Music in organ performance and Master of Arts in Teaching from Kent State University. He serves as Organist-Choirmaster at Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and has established himself as one of the most prolific voices in American choral music, with over 500 published works across sacred, secular, educational, and pop genres.
Moore's compositions appear regularly at state contests and festivals and have been performed at venues ranging from state competitions to international music conventions. He is a seventeen-time recipient of the ASCAP Composers Standard Award and was recognized by the American Choral Directors Association Choral Journal as one of 400 composers of historical significance in American choral music. His catalog spans choral octavos, organ and piano works, and eight educational books published through Alfred Music, Hal Leonard, Heritage Music Press, and other major publishers.
Why we love this
Moore's treatment of this Italian folk tune respects its character while making it genuinely singable for SATB groups at all levels. The waltz framework and dance-like voice lines feel natural rather than forced, and the flexibility to sing in English, Italian, or both gives directors real programming options without extra preparation work.
What to expect
Graceful and playful in equal measure, this arrangement captures the warmth of an Italian folk tradition while maintaining the lightness that defines a waltz. The voice parts move with natural ease, evoking the image of movement and celebration that inspired the title.
Who it's for
Directors seeking accessible yet musically genuine crosscultural repertoire for SATB choirs, particularly those preparing for contests, festivals, or concert programs centered on dance or world cultures. Singers with basic music reading skills can engage fully with the piece; the dance-like character and familiar folk origins make it rewarding for ensembles developing ensemble cohesion and expressive phrasing.
How to get the most out of it
- Maintain the lilting waltz momentum throughout by thinking in three rather than drilling individual beats; this keeps the phrase shape buoyant and prevents stiffness in the middle sections.
- If using the recorded accompaniment, let your singers hear it once in full tempo before rehearsal begins so they absorb the character and pulse without explicit counting.
- Decide early whether you'll perform in English, Italian, or mixed languages, and lock in pronunciation before final rehearsals; even small inconsistencies in vowel color between voice parts become noticeable in folk material this transparent.
- Balance the upper voices lightly against the lower parts; the arrangement's uncluttered design means every line is exposed, so resist the urge to oversing any section.
How to use it
Pair this with other folk-inspired or multicultural selections to create a concert set exploring global traditions, or program it as a joyful contrasting selection in a set of more substantial works. Its modest page count and engaging character also make it valuable for festival repertoire lists where directors need a reliable piece that balances accessibility with genuine artistry.
Skills your students will build
- Singing in waltz meter (3/4) with sustained phrase arc
- Diction in Italian and English with idiomatic vowel placement
- Blend and balance in homophonic textures
- Musicality in folk-derived material with dance-like rhythmic precision
