Description
Inspired by her idiosyncratic compositional style, we asked Gloria Coates in 1988 to write a new work for two guitars. She surprised us with an unusual yet coherent idea. Microintervals as the musical building blocks of a playing canon are at the heart of her guitar composition Lunar Loops. The scordatura (retuning) of the open guitar strings during playing is an original and astonishing idea of the composer. Using the traditional bottleneck technique, the sounds produced by the scordatura are brought to a thrilling climax, which erupts in an aggressive percussion section before the canon reverses. Lunar Loops was premiered at the 1989 Munich Guitar Festival by the guitar duo Ruth Fischer & Stephan Stiens in the Max Joseph Hall in Munich.
