About the Composer: Melody Bober

Melody Bober

Melody Bober has built her compositional voice around a fundamental belief: students learn best when they genuinely enjoy what they're playing. Her training spans music education, piano performance, and jazz, with degrees from the University of Illinois and Minnesota State University, Moorhead. She studied with acclaimed pianists Joel Shapiro and Andrew Froelich, and her mentors in music education and jazz shaped her instinct for writing pieces that teach while they delight.

With two decades of public school teaching, university instruction, and an active private studio practice, Bober understands exactly what intermediate students need. She serves as a church pianist and former music director, roles that deepened her grasp of how music functions in real performance contexts. Her work as a clinician at conventions and workshops across North America has made her a trusted voice in piano pedagogy. She lives in Minnesota with her husband Jeff.

Why we love this

Bober writes boogie-woogie that feels authentic without demanding superhuman coordination. The piece gives students genuine success with a style they'll recognize and want to master, and the rhythmic and dynamic flexibility she builds in means your students can perform it with personality rather than robotically execute it.

What to expect

Bober captures the infectious energy of boogie-woogie while keeping the technical demands reasonable. You'll feel the groove settle into your hands as the left-hand pattern becomes automatic, freeing you to play the melody with swing and attitude.

Who it's for

Intermediate pianists encountering boogie-woogie for the first time will find this piece rewarding and accessible. It's ideal for students who've mastered basic coordination between hands but are ready to explore contemporary rhythmic styles with confidence.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish the left-hand ostinato first as a separate learning track. Once it sits comfortably under the fingers, the melody becomes a natural conversation partner rather than a competing element.
  • Treat the tempo marking as an invitation, not a prescription. The boogie groove actually strengthens when students find their own relaxed tempo and commit to it completely.
  • Shape the dynamics with the melody line, not against it. A phrase that climbs should build; one that descends should settle. This approach keeps the accompaniment supportive rather than dominating.

How to use it

Include this in a recital program that celebrates different musical styles or eras, pairing it with classical repertoire to show range. It also works perfectly as a fun interlude during a spring concert or as part of a student showcase focused on contemporary piano music.

Skills your students will build

  • Left-hand ostinato independence and stamina
  • Boogie-woogie rhythmic feel and swing
  • Melodic phrasing over a steady accompaniment pattern
  • Dynamic control and contrast within a consistent groove
  • Groove-based interpretation and personal expression
