The development of intelligent practice habits is a major focus of this series. Through preparatory steps and questions, the student's attention is directed to the formal plan, musical meaning and technical demands of each piece. Chip and Bobo help the student develop awareness and self-criticism. The student's rhythmic sense is developed and, in the initial stages, each rhythmic symbol is counted for its own value rather than for its place in the measure. The books contain many solos and duets, and a dictionary of musical signs and terms is included at the back of each volume.
