About the Composer: Sherry Blevins

Sherry Blevins

Sherry Blevins has established herself as a prolific composer and lyricist whose work appears regularly through Alfred Music, Hinshaw, Fred Bock, Jocelyn Hagen Music, and other respected publishers. Since 2018, she has built a substantial catalog of over 27 published compositions while maintaining an active schedule conducting and composing for ensembles across North America and internationally, including appearances at Opera Lucca's Composer's Institute, multiple all-state honor choirs, and Carnegie Hall premieres with National Concerts and MidAmerica Productions.

Blevins has served as Past President of ACDA's Southern Region and Artistic Director of the Chattanooga Boys Choir. Her recent work emphasizes collaborative composition, most notably through a 2023 commissioning project where she co-composed with choirs across seven Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, resulting in pieces that reflect the voices and identities of middle and high school students. Her music is recognized for its melodic craftsmanship, harmonic accessibility, and intelligent text setting that serves both singers and listeners alike.

Why we love this

Blevins writes with an ear for what moves singers emotionally while keeping the musical language direct and communicative. The title itself signals what the music delivers: a piece about visibility, connection, and the yearning that resonates deeply with contemporary choral singers who want their work to matter beyond the stage.

What to expect

The piece carries an intimate quality that draws listeners inward rather than outward. It occupies the space between ballad and art song, with text and harmony working together to create moments of ache and recognition.

Who it's for

High school and college SATB choirs seeking repertoire that speaks to contemporary emotional experience without sacrificing musical sophistication. Directors programming thematic concerts around connection, identity, or introspection will find this piece particularly resonant.

How to get the most out of it

  • Build the emotional arc gradually rather than front-loading intensity. Let the opening establish vulnerability before the piece expands.
  • Balance the harmonic warmth against clarity in the middle voices; these singers often carry the color of the piece.
  • Attend closely to text phrasing in the SATB writing. Blevins layers meanings in how different voice parts enter and align with the text.

How to use it

Position this as a centerpiece for a concert exploring themes of vulnerability or human connection. It pairs naturally with other contemporary choral works that value emotional honesty and text clarity, offering a breathing moment between more rhythmically driven selections.

Skills your students will build

  • Sustaining emotional focus across extended phrases
  • Blending harmonic color within SATB voicing
  • Expressive text interpretation in contemporary music
  • Balance and independence in mixed voice writing
