About the Arranger: Mary Donnelly

Mary Donnelly

Mary Donnelly grew up in Reno, Nevada, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with majors in English and French from the University of Nevada, Reno. While still an undergraduate, she founded two children's choruses, an experience that redirected her toward music education. She completed a Master's Degree in Education from Lesley College in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with a focus on arts integration across the curriculum. For three decades, she taught general music and choir in elementary and middle schools throughout the Washoe County School District in Nevada.

In 1985, Donnelly began a creative partnership with George L.O. Strid when they co-taught a sixth grade music class. Their collaboration started with a musical commissioned for Reading Week and expanded into a prolific body of work spanning more than two hundred songs and twenty-five musicals. She remains active in ACDA, NEA, and ASCAP, and continues to live in Reno with her husband.

Why we love this

This PianoTrax recording gives your choir a flexible, high-quality accompaniment option for a beloved Scottish folk standard. Rather than relying on piano sight-reading during rehearsals, you can focus entirely on vocal tone, blend, and interpretation while the recorded accompaniment keeps everyone locked in. The digital format means your singers can practice independently at home, hearing the exact arrangement they'll perform.

What to expect

Loch Lomond carries the wistful, reflective quality of traditional Scottish music, with harmonic depth that invites expressive singing. The melody has the quality of a lament seasoned with quiet dignity, and the arrangement balances accessibility with emotional weight.

Who it's for

This recording serves choirs at any level seeking a reliable accompaniment for a Scottish classic. Directors without consistent access to a skilled pianist, or those wanting to free the piano player for other rehearsal duties, will find this particularly valuable. School choirs, community choruses, and church music programs all benefit from having a dependable recorded option on hand.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the choir's opening phrases carefully; the recorded accompaniment is supportive but not dominant, so your singers need confident, well-supported tone to project above it.
  • Use rehearsal time to address harmonic intonation, particularly in any moments where the choir sustains chords against the accompaniment.
  • Consider previewing the tempo and style of the recording with your section leaders before full ensemble rehearsal so singers know what to expect.

How to use it

Program this as a set piece in a concert celebrating folk traditions, or pair it with other arrangements of British Isles material for cultural programming. It works equally well as a standalone choral offering or as part of a larger thematic program around Scottish heritage.

Skills your students will build

  • Ensemble cohesion with recorded accompaniment
  • Phrase shaping and expressive interpretation
  • Independent vocal part security in harmonic context
