About the Composer: Pietro Antonio Locatelli
Pietro Antonio Locatelli (1695–1764) was an Italian violinist and composer who studied under Arcangelo Corelli and became one of the most technically demanding composers for the violin in the Baroque era. His published works, particularly his 12 Concerti Grossi and numerous solo concertos, pushed string players to their technical limits while maintaining the lyrical elegance of Italian Baroque style. Locatelli spent much of his career in Venice and Amsterdam, where he gained renown as both a virtuoso performer and a prolific composer of instrumental music.
Why we love this
This arrangement brings one of Locatelli's spirited works into a format your string section can tackle with genuine excitement. Tim McCarrick has preserved the drive and technical brilliance of the original while making it accessible to Grade 3 players, so you get authentic Italian Baroque character without sacrificing your ensemble's confidence.
What to expect
Fast-moving and spirited, with the kind of joyful virtuosity that made Locatelli a favorite among string players of his era. The high-spirited character feels fresh and alive, not precious or overly studied, making it feel like a genuine challenge rather than a chore.
Who it's for
String orchestra directors working with Grade 3 ensembles who want a piece with genuine Baroque swagger and technical engagement. This works equally well for players who thrive on fast, rhythmically clean music and need a confidence-building showcase.
How to get the most out of it
- Establish a steady, unwavering pulse from the opening. String players often feel the speed and try to rush; a conductor who holds the tempo firmly will keep the energy focused rather than scattered.
- Shape the fast passages with clear articulation and light bow strokes. Locatelli's style thrives on clarity, so encourage players to separate notes rather than blur them together even at tempo.
- Balance the inner voices with the melody line. String orchestras can easily disappear into a wall of sound; make sure violas and second violins cut through clearly so the texture stays bright and transparent.
- Use the optional third violin part strategically. If your roster is large, it adds fullness; if thin, omitting it keeps the piece leaner and cleaner.
How to use it
Open your concert with this to establish energy and grab attention immediately, or use it as an encore when you want to send the audience out smiling. The compact, high-impact design makes it perfect for either role without overshadowing other repertoire on your program.
Skills your students will build
- Sustaining fast passagework with clarity and rhythmic precision
- Balancing fast and slow bow strokes within rapid passages
- Voice independence in a multi-part texture where all parts are active
- Baroque articulation and phrasing conventions
- Responding to conductor tempo control in fast, exciting music
