Description
Thomas T. Frost has taken four of the most famous pieces from ANNA MAGDALENA NOTEBOOK to create this LITTLE SUITE for orchestra. In addition to the standard instrumentation, Frost also includes additional Clarinet parts to double the Oboe 1 and Bassoon 1 to add sonority to the sound of the wind body. Included: I. Minuet, BWV Anh.114 (transposed from the customer G Major to A; J.S. Bach); II. Musette, BWV Anh.126 (in D; J.S. Bach); III. Chorale "Bist Du Bei Mir," BWV 508 (in D; J.S. Bach); IV. Marche, H.1 (in D; long ascribed to J.S. Bach as BWV Anh.122, it is now known to be by C.P.E. Bach).

More about this title

About the Composer: Johann Sebastian Bach

Johann Sebastian Bach stands at the center of Western music history, a composer whose output defines the Baroque era and whose techniques remain foundational to music education today. Working primarily in Leipzig and Weimar during the early 18th century, Bach synthesized German, Italian, and French musical traditions into a body of work that spans sacred cantatas, instrumental suites, keyboard music, and chamber works of extraordinary sophistication.

Why we love this

Frost's orchestration transforms these intimate keyboard pieces into something luminous without losing their essential character. The addition of clarinet doublings is particularly smart, enriching the wind texture while respecting the original voicing, and the variety across four movements gives your orchestra meaningful contrasts without demanding excessive rehearsal time on a single extended work.

What to expect

Four snapshots of Bach's melodic gift: courtly and measured in the Minuet, gently lilting in the Musette, intimate and song-like in the Chorale, and spirited in the Marche. The orchestration keeps these pieces grounded in their original elegance while giving them room to breathe in a larger ensemble setting.

Who it's for

Orchestras working at the intermediate to advanced level who want accessible Bach without sacrificing musical substance. This suite serves directors programming baroque material alongside contemporary works or building concert units around music from the Anna Magdalena Notebook.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the inner voices carefully during the Minuet; the original keyboard writing depends on clear counterpoint, and doubling the oboe and bassoon will obscure these lines if the strings aren't transparent.
  • The Musette's drone character comes alive when the basso continuo section locks together rhythmically; give timpani and bass line independent rehearsal time to establish that foundation.
  • Shape "Bist Du Bei Mir" as a chorale would be sung: consistent but expressive phrasing in the melodic line, with dynamic support that never overshadows the tune.
  • Keep the Marche moving without rushing; the military quality lies in clean articulation and rhythmic precision, not tempo.

How to use it

This works naturally as a complete Baroque unit or split across a concert; the Chorale pairs beautifully with other vocal-style movements from your repertoire. Consider opening a concert with the Minuet and Musette to establish character before moving into larger-scale works, or place the full suite as an intermission piece when programming demands breathing room.

Skills your students will build

  • Articulation and phrasing in a contrapuntal context
  • Balancing doubled wind lines with string foundation
  • Interpreting baroque ornamentation and style
  • Maintaining rhythmic clarity in suite-form movements
  • Dynamic shaping that supports melody without overwhelming accompaniment
