About the Arranger: Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse brings decades of practical music education experience to his arrangements and compositions. After earning degrees in Music Education and Music from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, he spent eight years managing rights and licensing at a major educational publisher, where he also served on the Executive Board of the Music Publishers Association of America.

With over 800 choral works in print, Althouse has established himself as a prolific voice in accessible choral music performed across the English-speaking world. He holds ASCAP membership and regularly receives the ASCAP Special Award for his contributions to standard music. Beyond composition, he has co-authored influential pedagogical resources including The Complete Choral Warm-up Book and Accent on Composers, and collaborated with his wife Sally K. Albrecht on children's musicals and the choral work I Hear America Singing, performed at President Obama's 2009 Inauguration.

Why we love this

This arrangement captures the infectious energy of a pop holiday favorite in a format that works for developing male voices. Althouse gives TBB and TTB groups genuine flexibility (TTBB compatible too), so you're not locked into one voicing, and the inclusion of recorded accompaniment tracks means you can rehearse effectively even without a pianist.

What to expect

Bright, propulsive, and unmistakably modern. The arrangement strips away overly formal arrangements of this recognizable melody and gives singers a genuine contemporary pop feel that audiences connect with immediately. It's fun without being juvenile, energetic without becoming exhausting.

Who it's for

Male choirs and mixed groups with strong tenor sections looking for genuine crowd-pleasing material that doesn't demand lengthy rehearsal time. Works equally well for high school programs and community ensembles seeking accessible holiday repertoire with authentic pop sensibility.

How to get the most out of it

  • Use the recorded accompaniment in early rehearsals to lock in the groove; male singers often respond better to hearing the full texture before drilling parts
  • Keep the energy bright and conversational rather than precious; this is a tune that thrives on spirit, not restraint
  • The TBB voicing works best when basses aren't doubling the melody line; let tenors carry the lead while basses lock into the harmonic foundation

How to use it

Program this early in a holiday concert when energy is highest, or use it as a closer to send audiences home in spirits. The accessibility and familiarity make it excellent for community outreach concerts or events where you want strong audience engagement alongside solid musicianship.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing in pop/contemporary style with rhythmic precision
  • Balancing melody and harmony in male voice textures
  • Performing with pre-recorded accompaniment
  • Sustaining energy and ensemble cohesion in uptempo material
