About the Composer: Rossano Galante

Rossano Galante

Rossano Galante grew up in Buffalo, New York, and earned his Bachelor of Arts in Trumpet Performance from SUNY Buffalo in 1992. That same year, he was one of only nineteen people worldwide selected for the University of Southern California's Film Scoring Program, where he studied composition under the legendary Jerry Goldsmith, Academy Award winner for his work on The Omen.

Since relocating to California in 1999, Galante has established himself as an accomplished orchestrator and composer. He has collaborated with Oscar-nominated composers Marco Beltrami, Christophe Beck, Brian Tyler, and Christopher Lennertz, and served as orchestrator on over eighty feature films including the Avengers and Fast X franchises, A Quiet Place, Logan, and The Mummy. Alongside his film work, Galante maintains an active presence in concert music, with more than 68 published compositions for band and orchestra commissioned and performed worldwide through publishers including Alfred, Schirmer, and Curnow.

Why we love this

Galante's film orchestration background shines through in the sweeping, cinematic quality of this score. The work sits comfortably at Grade 4 without feeling thin or simplified; instead, it delivers genuine emotional depth that engages both players and listeners. This is the kind of piece that reminds students why they joined band in the first place.

What to expect

Life Eternal unfolds with the grandeur of a film score translated into band color. Sweeping melodic arcs float above rich harmonic writing, creating a landscape of remembrance that feels both cinematic and intimate. The work invites the listener into quiet reflection before building to moments of soaring lyrical beauty.

Who it's for

Concert bands at the Grade 4 level seeking accessible music with genuine artistic substance. This work appeals equally to competitive festival programs looking for a piece that communicates maturity and to community bands wanting to offer their audience something beyond the obvious.

How to get the most out of it

  • Allow the melodic lines to breathe by shaping phrases with gentle dynamic swells rather than rigid crescendos. The beauty of this work depends on legit control of tone production across the entire band.
  • Balance the harmonic foundation carefully in the lower voices so that moving countermelodies in the upper woodwinds can sing without strain. Galante's orchestration reveals itself when every color is heard.
  • Resist the urge to rush the reflective passages. The work's emotional impact relies on sustained tension and patient phrasing, not forward momentum.

How to use it

This work functions beautifully as a concert centerpiece on festivals or concert programs focused on thematic programming around reflection, legacy, or contemporary expression. Its substantial length (5:46) and emotional arc make it ideal as the second or closing piece on a program, where it can leave a lasting impression without requiring context.

Skills your students will build

  • Sustaining lyrical lines with consistent tone quality and dynamic control
  • Balancing transparent harmonic textures across multiple voice parts
  • Interpreting phrasing in contemporary concert music with minimal marking
  • Responding to elegant orchestration that requires listening beyond one's own part
  • Managing longer form music with emotional arc and thematic development
