About the Composer: Joseph M. Martin

Joseph M. Martin

Joseph M. Martin studied piano performance at Furman University and earned his master's degree from the University of Texas at Austin, where he also taught in the Piano Pedagogy Department for five years. His career as a concert pianist has taken him across the United States and Mexico, including performances with the Guadalajara Symphony Orchestra as winner of the Nina Plant Wideman Competition, and his recital work has been broadcast nationally.

Though Martin continues to perform as a solo artist, his focus has shifted toward composing and arranging music for worship settings and church music conferences. His catalog now appears in venues ranging from Carnegie Hall to hundreds of congregations across the United States and Canada. He lives in Austin, Texas with his family.

Why we love this

Martin's gift for writing accessible yet musically substantial choral work shines here. This setting captures the contemplative spirit of the Advent/Christmas season without relying on oversimplified harmonies or tired arranging clichés, making it genuinely rewarding for your singers to rehearse and perform.

What to expect

The piece carries a reverent, contemplative mood that centers the sacred meaning of the season. There's warmth and accessibility here without sacrificing musical depth; this reads as church music with genuine integrity rather than holiday decoration.

Who it's for

Men's choirs and mixed groups comfortable with TTBB writing will find this octavo serves well for holiday programming. It works equally for experienced collegiate ensembles and motivated high school or community choirs seeking substantive seasonal repertoire.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the melodic lines with clear phrase arcs, especially through longer sustained passages, so the text lands with intention rather than drifting.
  • Balance the TTBB texture carefully in rehearsal; mark tuning trouble spots early and drill them separately by section to lock secure pitches before adding other voices.
  • Let the dynamic shape breathe naturally with the text's emotional arc rather than hitting every marked dynamic change mechanically.

How to use it

Slot this into December concerts as an anchor piece that pairs effectively with both traditional carols and other contemporary sacred settings. Its nine pages provide enough substance to anchor a second half of a program devoted to the Christmas story.

Skills your students will build

  • Four-part harmonic awareness in TTBB voicing
  • Clarity in sacred text declamation
  • Sustaining longer phrase lines with consistent tone quality
  • Blend and balance between high and low male voices
