About the Composer: Joseph M. Martin

Joseph M. Martin

Joseph M. Martin studied piano performance at Furman University and later earned his master's degree from the University of Texas at Austin, where he subsequently taught in the Piano Pedagogy Department for five years. A accomplished solo pianist, he has performed recitals across the United States and Mexico, including a performance with the Guadalajara Symphony Orchestra as winner of the Nina Plant Wideman Competition. His solo work was broadcast nationally, and his compositions and arrangements now appear in venues ranging from Carnegie Hall to church sanctuaries throughout North America.

Martin has shifted his focus toward church music, composing and arranging extensively for worship settings and conferences of church musicians. He brings decades of performance experience and musical sophistication to his work for choirs and congregational singing. Based in Austin, Texas, Martin continues to compose music that balances accessibility with artistic depth, creating works that serve both the church musician and the worshipping community.

Why we love this

Martin writes for practical ensembles without sacrificing musicality. The SAB voicing gives you honest three-part writing that avoids the thin, divisi-heavy arrangements that plague many holiday pieces at this level. His text setting respects the words while supporting strong vocal lines that your singers will enjoy performing.

What to expect

Warm and reflective, with the gentle dignity of a processional. The writing unfolds with unhurried grace, letting the text breathe while maintaining lyrical momentum. There's genuine joy here, but expressed through careful arrangement rather than bombast.

Who it's for

Directors with SAB or three-part mixed choirs seeking quality Christmas repertoire that works for both worship services and concert settings. This piece serves intermediate choirs that have solid blend and basic intonation but may not have advanced divisi capability.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the divisi passages in the soprano line by assigning section singers deliberately rather than letting them self-divide. This keeps the texture honest and prevents one part from disappearing.
  • Shape each phrase with clear breath marks, particularly where Martin sets shorter text phrases. Resist the impulse to rush through quieter moments; they carry the emotional weight.
  • Connect the harmonic progressions by maintaining legit legato between sections. Martin's voicings reward smooth part writing that lets the voice leading breathe naturally.
  • Anchor the alto and bass lines with a steady pulse. These parts ground the soprano melody, so ensure they have rhythmic confidence even in accompanying passages.

How to use it

Use this as a centerpiece for a mid-winter service or concert, pairing it with instrumental accompaniment or organ support. It works particularly well in a program that mixes contemplative Advent material with lighter holiday fare. The nine pages allow for a substantial but not oversized number that can anchor a choral segment without crowding out other repertoire.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing sustained vowels across multiple phrases
  • Identifying and executing phrase boundaries in three-part texture
  • Balancing harmonic color in divisi passages
  • Maintaining intonation in slower tempos with fuller chords
  • Singing text expression with shape and intention
