Carl Strommen

Carl Strommen's career spans multiple musical disciplines. His compositions and arrangements for band, orchestra, jazz ensemble, and choir have been performed by thousands of groups across North America and beyond, earning regular airtime in concert halls, broadcast media, and film scoring. He maintains an active schedule as both a clinician and a commission composer, drawing on decades of experience in educational and professional settings.

Strommen holds a degree from City College of New York and currently serves as an adjunct professor of orchestration and composition at C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University. His consistent output has made him a perennial recipient of the ASCAP Standard Writers Award. He divides his time between Long Island and Colorado.

Why we love this

Strommen writes with genuine warmth and accessibility without sacrificing musicality. This arrangement captures a contemporary gospel sensibility that speaks to today's choir singers while remaining grounded in solid part writing and singable ranges, making it equally effective for concert programming and community settings.

What to expect

The contemporary gospel sound brings warmth and immediacy to the stage. Strommen's affirmative message combines with accessible part writing to create an arrangement that feels both current and inclusive, inviting singers to invest emotionally while maintaining musical integrity.

Who it's for

This piece fits naturally into any choir's annual concert calendar, whether you're building a diverse program or seeking an uplifting closer. Moderate difficulty makes it accessible for high school choirs and community singing groups while remaining rewarding for more experienced ensembles.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the melodic line with subtle dynamic swells that highlight the most emotionally resonant lyrics, allowing the positive message to land naturally rather than feeling forced.
  • Balance the two parts carefully during ensemble passages; the upper and lower voices should blend as one harmonic unit rather than competing for attention.
  • Explore the recorded accompaniment early in rehearsal to establish the contemporary gospel groove, then gradually develop independence from it so singers own the rhythmic feel.
  • Let the natural energy of the text inform phrasing and breath placement rather than adhering rigidly to bar lines, particularly in moments where the gospel idiom calls for rhythmic flexibility.

How to use it

This works equally well as a concert centerpiece or a feel-good finale. The contemporary style pairs naturally with other modern sacred or secular choral work, or it can serve as a spiritual and tonal bridge between classical repertoire and more contemporary styles in a mixed program.
