About the Composer: Patti Drennan

Patti Drennan

Patti Drennan shaped choral music in Oklahoma for nearly three decades, teaching at West Mid-High School and Norman High School where her ensembles consistently earned superior ratings. Her work in the classroom earned her Teacher of the Year recognition and, in 2004, the Director of Distinction Award from the Oklahoma Choral Directors Association. She holds degrees in music education from Oklahoma State University and the University of Oklahoma.

With over 425 published choral octavos and two million copies in circulation, Drennan has become a prolific voice in American choral composition. She has clinicked across 19 states, Canada, and major conferences, adjudicated contests across the South and Midwest, and led composer weekends for churches nationwide. Since retiring from full-time teaching, she continues composing, arranging, and performing, including collaborative work with her daughter Emily in symphonic and recording projects.

Why we love this

Drennan's gift for writing singable, emotionally direct choral lines comes through in every phrase of this octavo. The piece balances accessibility with genuine musical substance, making it equally rewarding whether your singers are building their technique or delivering the piece for a dedicated worship service.

What to expect

The piece carries a quiet, introspective quality that gradually builds conviction. Singers will feel the difference between simple melody and purposeful arrangement as they discover how the four parts weave together to create something larger than any single line.

Who it's for

This octavo suits SATB choirs at the intermediate level and above who are looking for meaningful sacred material without excessive technical demands. Whether you direct a school choir, a church ensemble, or both, the singability and emotional depth make this a strong choice for mixed groups seeking to deepen their connection to spiritual text.

How to get the most out of it

  • Emphasize the text clarity by keeping voices unified in vowel formation; the spiritual intent depends on audiences hearing every word.
  • Let the inner voices breathe on their own lines rather than doubling the melody, which gives the arrangement its harmonic richness.
  • Resist the urge to rush through passages in the middle section; spacious phrasing honors the reflective character of the text.

How to use it

Nest this octavo in a concert devoted to service and giving, pairing it with other works that explore themes of faith and action. Its 13 pages are substantial enough to anchor a concert section but brief enough to slot naturally between longer works or anchor a brief devotional program.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading four-part SATB voicing with independent inner voices
  • Sustaining long phrases with proper breath control
  • Balancing part independence while maintaining harmonic cohesion
  • Text expression and meaning-driven phrasing in sacred music
