About the Arranger: Mark Hayes

Mark Hayes

Mark Hayes has composed and arranged over 1,750 published works across every musical genre imaginable. A summa cum laude graduate of Baylor University's piano performance program, Hayes built his reputation as a concert pianist, conductor, and orchestrator of exceptional range. His résumé includes conducting at Lincoln Center, the National Cathedral, and Carnegie Hall, world premieres at major venues, and commissions from institutions across the globe. In 2010, Baylor University's Center for Christian Music Studies recognized his contributions with the Award for Exemplary Leadership in Christian Music.

Beyond his sacred music catalog, Hayes has orchestrated hit musicals, produced records, and written over 100 piano books spanning gospel, classical, jazz, and Broadway styles. Whether conducting his Requiem at St. Ignatius Basilica in Rome, premiering works in Hong Kong, or composing at his Kansas City home, Hayes channels his mission to create accessible, beautiful music for all musicians.

Why we love this

Hayes knows exactly how to make a holiday standard shine without overcomplicating it. His arrangement respects the tune's DNA while adding enough harmonic sophistication and textural variety to keep experienced singers engaged, making it ideal for choirs that want to sound polished during the busiest concert season.

What to expect

Cozy and bright at once. The arrangement wraps the familiar melody in warm harmonies that feel like gathering around a piano on a snowy evening, with just enough harmonic color to remind you this isn't the simplest Christmas song you've ever sung.

Who it's for

SATB choirs performing holiday concerts who need a sophisticated take on a beloved standard. This works equally well for church choirs, community ensembles, and educational groups with solid vocal fundamentals.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the melody in soprano and tenor lines; Hayes layers them strategically, so let those voices carry the primary tune while altos and basses support underneath.
  • Shape the phrase endings with slight ritards to emphasize the song's natural conversational warmth rather than pushing straight through.
  • Use diction clarity in faster passages to let the text shine. This arrangement rewards articulate consonants and sustained vowels.
  • Layer in light dynamics between verses. A gentle pull back on softer sections highlights the moments when the full choir comes in strong.

How to use it

Open a second half of a holiday concert with this piece to establish an intimate, welcoming mood before moving into more elaborate choral works. It also pairs beautifully with traditional carols, offering a refreshing mid-program shift in style and energy.

Skills your students will build

  • Voice independence in four-part harmony with strategic doublings
  • Phrase shaping and pacing in a stylistically familiar context
  • Balancing melody and accompaniment texture within a single SATB unit
  • Articulation and diction control in moderately paced passages
