About the Arranger: Greg Gilpin

Greg Gilpin

Greg Gilpin brings decades of choral expertise to his work as both a composer and arranger, holding an ASCAP award and serving as Director of Educational Choral Publications for Shawnee Press. His conducting appearances span major venues including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Ryman Auditorium, Sydney Opera House, Royal Festival Hall, and Harpa Concert Hall, establishing him as a leader in the choral world.

Beyond the concert stage, Gilpin has expanded his creative reach into film scoring, winning Best Score for the short film "Rosie's Rescue" in 2021, and collaborated with opera singer Angela Brown on a new arrangement of "What Child is This?" premiered by the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir. He holds active membership in ACDA, NAfME, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, while also serving as a certified financial coach and professional organizer through his company Maestro Organizing.

Why we love this

Gilpin's arrangement captures the infectious joy of this winter standard without overshadowing the melody that audiences already know and love. The seven-page setting strikes an excellent balance between accessibility for good singers and enough harmonic interest to keep your ensemble engaged throughout the season.

What to expect

Bright, nostalgic, and utterly winsome. The piece wraps you in the warmth of a familiar tune while creating that sense of cozy anticipation that the original song evokes so perfectly.

Who it's for

Any SATB ensemble looking for a reliable holiday selection that works for both concert and casual performance settings. This arrangement suits singers with solid vocal fundamentals and the ability to track simple harmonic movement.

How to get the most out of it

  • Keep the tempo brisk and bouncy; this song thrives on forward motion and the rhythmic energy that makes the text feel playful rather than sluggish.
  • Balance the voices carefully during unison or octave sections so the melody remains crystal clear even as internal parts move.
  • Pay attention to diction on the repeated "let it snow" text; the crisp consonants should pop without sounding forced or rushed.

How to use it

Slot this into your holiday concert as an accessible anchor piece that audiences will immediately recognize and enjoy, or use it as a lighter moment between more demanding choral works. It also functions beautifully as an encore that leaves listeners smiling.

Skills your students will build

  • Balancing melody and harmony in four-part writing
  • Maintaining rhythmic precision in a brisk tempo
  • Executing clean diction on repeated textual phrases
  • Blending voices across different register combinations
