About the Composer: Ruth Morris Gray

Ruth Morris Gray holds the position of Director of Choirs at Rosemead High School in California, where she has led the choral program since 2004. She also teaches piano at the school. Gray earned a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance and Composition from Biola University and continued her studies with a Master of Arts in Music Composition from UC Santa Barbara, followed by her California Single Subject Music Credential from California State University, Northridge.
With over 100 published choral compositions to her name, Gray brings both compositional sophistication and classroom experience to her work. Beyond music, she is an active performer and educator who finds inspiration through travel, reading, and outdoor pursuits with her husband.
Why we love this
Gray knows exactly how to write patriotic music that feels genuinely stirring rather than clichéd. She weaves together familiar national texts with fresh melodic material and harmonic depth, giving singers something substantive to perform while maintaining accessibility for mixed voices. The combination of newly composed passages and tastefully integrated passages from "America the Beautiful" creates a piece that feels both timely and traditional.
What to expect
Bright and forward-moving, with a sense of authentic pride that builds momentum through the piece. The original melody feels expansive and modern, while the harmonic language supports rather than overshadows the text. By the time "America the Beautiful" surfaces, the piece has earned its familiar moment, creating genuine emotional lift.
Who it's for
This piece works beautifully for middle school through high school choirs seeking a patriotic selection with real musical substance. The SAB voicing makes it accessible to mixed ensembles with developing singers, while the compositional craft keeps it engaging for more experienced groups. It's ideal for directors who want students to connect with meaningful text without compromising musicality.
How to get the most out of it
- Shape the new melody with steady, supported tone in the opening section. Gray's writing rewards legit breath control and consistent phrase arc.
- Balance the three parts carefully when "America the Beautiful" enters near the end. The familiar tune should sing clearly without drowning out the supporting harmonies.
- Let the text "let freedom ring in our hearts" land with genuine resonance. This is the emotional heart of the piece; avoid rushing through it.
- Use the recorded accompaniment to lock in tempo and harmonic context, especially during the transition into the familiar refrain.
How to use it
Perfect as a centerpiece for a Fourth of July concert or patriotic program in late spring or early summer. The piece can also anchor a general assembly or community performance where you want to showcase choral depth without programming something overly serious or ceremonial. Its uplifting arc makes it an excellent closer or standalone feature.
Skills your students will build
