About the Composer: Joseph M. Martin

Joseph M. Martin studied piano performance at Furman University and later earned his master's degree from the University of Texas at Austin, where he also taught in the Piano Pedagogy Department for five years. His career spans both concert performance and church music, with solo recitals and symphony orchestra appearances across the United States and Mexico, including a broadcast performance from Ex-convento del Carman and a competition win that led to a featured appearance with the Guadalajara Symphony Orchestra.
Today Martin balances his ongoing concert work with a deep focus on church music and worship conferences. His compositional output reflects this dual life: his pieces appear in venues ranging from Carnegie Hall to hundreds of churches across North America. He lives in Austin, Texas with his wife Sue and their children Jonathan and Aubrey.
Why we love this
Martin's gift for infusing sacred text with genuine exuberance shines throughout this anthem. The combination of psalm-based lyrics and unrestrained musical energy creates something that feels both liturgically grounded and concert-worthy, giving directors flexibility in how and where they program it without sacrificing integrity.
What to expect
Energy radiates from every phrase. The music bursts with the kind of uninhibited praise that makes singers and listeners alike sit up straighter, yet it never sacrifices musical sophistication. There's a generosity to the writing that invites the whole room to celebrate.
Who it's for
This works for choirs seeking repertoire that bridges sacred and secular contexts with equal conviction. It suits ensembles of intermediate skill and above who want to deliver both joy and substance in a single piece.
How to get the most out of it
- Lean into the rhythmic vitality of the score; let the instrumental parts drive the ensemble's forward motion rather than playing cautiously.
- Balance the jubilant character with textual clarity so the psalm passages and poetic language register with listeners in both worship and concert settings.
- Use the recorded accompaniment during rehearsals to lock in harmonic progressions and ensemble tuning before working independently.
How to use it
Open a concert or worship service with this to establish an immediate mood of celebration and connection. It pairs well alongside other Martin works or serves as an energetic anchor between more introspective pieces.
Skills your students will build
- Sustaining rhythmic energy across longer phrases without losing ensemble blend
- Singing psalm text with clarity and reverence while maintaining forward momentum
- Interpreting articulation and dynamic variety to enhance textual meaning
- Balancing choir and instrumental parts as equal musical partners
