Why we love this
This piece captures the cinematic storytelling sensibility that defines Thomas's professional work, translating it into a Grade 3 score that gives young orchestras real musical drama to sink their teeth into. The combination of marcato bowings, syncopation, and ostinato rhythms creates texture and energy without requiring advanced technique, making it an engaging choice for developing ensembles. The programmatic Roman soldier narrative gives your students a concrete story to animate their playing, transforming a technically accessible arrangement into something theatrically compelling.
What to expect
Rugged and propulsive, like watching an ancient warrior march to battle. The marcato bowings and bold ostinatos create a sense of forward momentum and controlled power, while the tension-building trills add moments of building dread that contrast beautifully with the brash, confident main material. This is music that moves through space with purpose.
Who it's for
String orchestras at the Grade 3 level looking for music with genuine dramatic punch and programmatic interest. This score appeals to young musicians who respond to storytelling and visual imagery, and it gives developing ensembles a chance to tackle rhythmic complexity and textural layering without overwhelming technique demands.
How to get the most out of it
- Shape the marcato bowings with clear articulation while maintaining a connected sound; think of each attack as a controlled punch rather than a jab, letting the bow spring from the string without losing tone.
- Lock the ostinato rhythms between sections before adding the melodic lines; a firm rhythmic foundation makes the syncopations land with maximum impact.
- Build tension deliberately during the trill passages by gradually tightening dynamics and ensemble unity; don't let these moments flatten just because they repeat.
- Balance the "brawny" character with intonation checks in unison passages; power without precision reads as sloppiness, not strength.
How to use it
This works beautifully as a concert opener or as a centerpiece that divides lighter repertoire; its theatrical momentum can energize an audience and signal that your ensemble is capable of substantial work. Pair it with contrasting material that explores lyrical or delicate textures, allowing the "Legionary" to anchor a program around a theme of strength and adventure.
