Description
Le Tribut de Zamora, CG 12 (The Tribute of Zamora) was composed in 1881 by Charles Gounod (1818-1893) as part of his final completed opera, a grand historical work set in medieval Spain during the conflict between Christian and Moorish forces. The opera is written in the late-19th-century French grand opera tradition, with its emphasis on spectacle, exotic settings, and elaborate stage elements, including an extended ballet sequence. Le Tribut de Zamora premiered on April 1, 1881, at the Paris Opéra, where it initially attracted attention for its scale and craftsmanship, though it did not achieve lasting popularity. The ballet music appears in the later acts of the opera, providing a moment of diversion within the serious dramatic narrative. Today the Ballet Music is occasionally performed in concert, even as the complete opera itself remains rarely staged. Dances included: 1. Barcarolle; 2. Danse Espagnole; 3. Danse des Pointes; 4. Danse Italienne. Instrumentation: 1.1.2.1: 2.2(Crnt).1.0: Timp.Perc(2-3): Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set): CS (Pno-Cond) in set. Reprint edition of the arrangement for orchestra by Richard Klugescheid.

More about this title

About the Composer: Charles Gounod

Charles Gounod (1818-1893) stands as one of the most performed French composers of the 19th century, with a gift for lyrical melody that made his work accessible to audiences across Europe. His operas, particularly Faust and Roméo et Juliet, secured his place in the repertoire, while his sacred music and orchestral works demonstrated his versatility across genres. Late in his career, Gounod continued composing for the stage, creating grand operas that honored the French tradition of spectacle and dramatic storytelling even as musical tastes were shifting around him.

Why we love this

Gounod's ballet music delivers authentic 19th-century orchestral writing without the logistical demands of staging a full opera. The four contrasting dances give ensembles the chance to sink their teeth into character pieces that showcase genuine compositional craft: the Barcarolle moves with Venetian elegance, the Spanish dance brings rhythmic verve, the Danse des Pointes sparkles with technical clarity, and the Italian dance rounds out the suite with charm. For theater and salon orchestras, this condensed score hits the sweet spot between substantial concert programming and practical instrumentation.

What to expect

The music carries the luxurious sensibility of a European opera house in its prime: ornate yet refined, spectacle rendered in melody and orchestral color. Each dance paints its own world, from the gondola-song intimacy of the Barcarolle to the flashing brilliance of the Danse des Pointes, creating a suite that entertains without demanding anything beyond the orchestra's musical focus.

Who it's for

Theater orchestras, salon ensembles, and community orchestras seeking concert repertoire that audiences recognize as genuinely theatrical without requiring elaborate staging. This score works equally well for conductors building a French opera-adjacent program or those looking to fill a ballet music niche beyond Delibes and Tchaikovsky.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the woodwind solos in the Barcarolle carefully; the oboe and clarinet lines need to sing without overwhelming the accompaniment's gentle rocking motion.
  • Bring out the rhythmic character of the Danse Espagnole by articulating the accompaniment crisply while allowing the melodic line room to breathe.
  • Light articulation in the string tremolo passages of the Danse des Pointes will enhance the delicate, ethereal quality Gounod intended.
  • The Danse Italienne relies on clear, buoyant phrasing; resist the urge to slow down during transitions, as the forward momentum sustains the suite's energy.

How to use it

Slot this into a "Dances from the Opera" concert alongside lighter fare like Swan Lake excerpts or Gounod's own Funeral March of a Marionette. The suite also works as a graceful opener or closer for a pops concert, offering sophistication without the weight of a full symphonic work. For educational ensembles, program it in the latter part of the season when technical facility has solidified.

Skills your students will build

  • Articulation control in rapid scalar figures and accompaniment patterns
  • Balancing solo voices within lightly orchestrated textures
  • Sustaining phrasing across traditionally structured dance forms
  • Responding to shifts in character and mood within a connected suite
  • Executing clear rhythmic precision in syncopated and dance-inflected passages
