About the Arranger: Shirl Jae Atwell
Shirl Jae Atwell studied composition at the University of Louisville, where she earned her Master of Music Theory/Composition degree, and continued advanced work in composition at the University of South Carolina. Her orchestral and operatic works have been performed across the United States, from the Louisville Ballet's premiere of her ballet Lucy in 1999 to multiple premieres by regional orchestras and school ensembles.
Atwell's compositions have earned significant recognition, including the 1984 Clifford Shaw Memorial Award for Kentucky Composers, a 1996 National School Orchestra Association composition contest win, and a 1997 Texas Orchestra Directors Association award. Her string orchestra piece Modus á Four and several other scores are held in the permanent collection of the Paris Bibliothèque Internationale de Musique Contemporaine. The televised production of Lucy received an Emmy Award for Arts and Culture in 2000 from the Ohio Valley Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
