About the Arranger: Kirby Shaw

Kirby Shaw

Kirby Shaw's influence on choral music education spans five decades and six continents. He holds degrees in Music Education and Choral Composition from San Jose State University and a DMA in Choral Conducting from the University of Washington. His career has included directing innovative vocal jazz ensembles at the College of the Siskiyous, Colorado State University, and the University of Missouri at Kansas City, and he currently directs the Jefferson State Choral Coalition at Southern Oregon University.

With over 2,500 choral arrangements and compositions in print, Shaw's work has sold nearly 20 million copies worldwide and earned multiple ASCAP awards. He has scatted one-on-one with jazz legends including Bobby McFerrin, Al Jarreau, and Jon Hendricks, and serves as a member of Just 4 Kicks, a four-man a cappella jazz ensemble. His teaching style combines deep musical knowledge with humor and infectious energy that has touched thousands of singers across North America, Europe, Australia, and the Caribbean.

Why we love this

Shaw's arrangement captures the spiritual weight of this traditional material while keeping it accessible for mid-level choirs. The gospel idiom sits naturally in SATB voicing when arranged by someone who understands both the historical authenticity and contemporary execution that this music demands. Your singers will find themselves engaged not just by the melody but by the rhythmic sophistication and harmonic language that makes this arrangement a genuine musical experience rather than a surface-level treatment.

What to expect

The spiritual carries forward with a modern rhythmic pulse. Shaw's writing preserves the emotional directness and melodic strength of the tradition while infusing it with contemporary harmonic language and swing sensibility. There is urgency and spiritual yearning in this material; your singers will feel it.

Who it's for

This octavo works for choirs with solid ensemble cohesion and some experience with gospel idioms. High school show choirs, college chamber ensembles, and community choirs looking to expand beyond classical repertoire will find this accessible and rewarding to perform.

How to get the most out of it

  • Pay attention to the rhythmic precision in the accompaniment parts; gospel swing requires ensemble members to lock together with precise eighth note placement rather than rushing the backbeat.
  • Let the spiritual text inform your phrasing. The storytelling nature of the narrative shapes how you approach breath placement and phrase length, even more than strict musical notation suggests.
  • The soprano line likely carries the familiar melody, but make sure inner voices aren't relegated to background status. Shaw writes with intention in each part, and balance that brings out harmonic color will deepen the arrangement significantly.

How to use it

Position this in a concert that welcomes genre diversity, especially in programming that honors African American musical traditions alongside European classical forms. It pairs well with other spirituals or gospel arrangements, or it can stand alone as a powerful standalone piece that gives audiences something they genuinely remember after the concert ends.

Skills your students will build

  • Gospel swing rhythms and articulation
  • Blend and balance in jazz-influenced harmonic progressions
  • Authentic interpretation of African American spiritual idioms
  • Part independence within homophonic textures
