About the Composer: Bruce W. Tippette

Bruce W. Tippette

Bruce W. Tippette brings both compositional rigor and practical classroom experience to his work. A graduate of Appalachian State University and the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, where he earned degrees in composition, theory, and music education before completing his Master of Music, Tippette has built a career as a composer, performer, and educator in Winston-Salem.

His compositions span concert works, film scores, choreography, and collaborations with Cirque du Soleil, earning him recognition including the 2012 Mary Starling Composition Competition for his orchestral work Unconquered. As an educator, Tippette teaches composition, theory, piano, and voice at UNCSA's Community Music School, serves as director of youth music and handbells at Augsburg Lutheran Church, and regularly works as a rehearsal accompanist and freelance music engraver.

Why we love this

Tippette crafts holiday music that sits comfortably in the middle of the SAB repertoire landscape without sacrificing musical substance. The 11-page octavo gives your singers enough material to feel like a complete performance statement, yet the voicing and technical demands are genuinely manageable for developing ensembles.

What to expect

Warm and inclusive, with the kind of harmonic sophistication that gives singers something real to sing while keeping the piece approachable. The writing respects both the solemnity and the joy embedded in Christmastime celebrations.

Who it's for

SAB choirs ranging from high school level ensembles to community choruses looking for accessible yet musically substantial holiday material. Singers need basic part-reading skills and secure intonation in a three-part texture, but the writing avoids extreme ranges and technically demanding passage work.

How to get the most out of it

  • Pay attention to the blend between the two soprano parts in sections where they diverge; this layering creates harmonic depth without requiring advanced vocal technique from either line.
  • Let the text shape your phrasing rather than relying on phrase marks alone. Holiday texts naturally suggest musical breathing points that can guide your interpretation.
  • Balance the bass line carefully so it anchors the harmony without overwhelming the upper voices; SAB textures benefit from this clarity.
  • Rehearse voice parts separately enough to build confidence, then spend your full-group time on tuning the three-part sonorities and refining musical details.

How to use it

Position this as a centerpiece for a holiday concert program, either alone or paired with contrasting styles. The piece works equally well as your opening number to set a festive tone or as a substantial moment mid-program that anchors a diverse set list.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing SAB textures with secure part independence
  • Sustaining intonation in three-part harmonic movement
  • Interpreting expressive direction and text painting
  • Ensemble blend and balance across vocal ranges
