Description
Written in 1739, George Frideric Handels Concerti Grossi Op. 6 are among the most popular pieces he composed for strings. The stately Larghetto and spirited Allegro ma non troppo of the Concerto No. 3 in E minor make a delightful pairing. Originally scored for two solo (ripieno) violins and cello with accompanying strings and basso continuo, the Larghetto and Allegro have been adapted and re-scored for string orchestra. All parts are within the abilities of intermediate-level groups and are a wonderful way to introduce elements of Baroque style.

More about this title

About the Composer: George Frideric Handel

George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) dominated European musical life across two continents, splitting his career between Italy, Germany, and England. His mastery of melody and harmonic architecture shaped the Baroque era, and his string works remain cornerstones of the orchestral repertoire.

Handel's Concerti Grossi Op. 6 represent the height of his compositional craft, combining the intimate dialogue of solo instruments with the grandeur of the full ensemble. These works showcase his genius for weaving together multiple melodic lines without sacrificing clarity or forward momentum, making them invaluable pedagogical models for string players.

Why we love this

Whittington's arrangement strips away none of the elegance that made Op. 6 canonical; instead, it makes Handel's architectural brilliance accessible to developing ensembles. The pairing of the serene Larghetto against the energetic Allegro ma non troppo gives you a complete musical statement that programs beautifully and leaves audiences genuinely satisfied.

What to expect

The Larghetto opens with courtly restraint, unfolding in measured phrases that feel almost introspective. The Allegro ma non troppo ignites the same material with agility and buoyancy, transforming reflection into conversation.

Who it's for

Intermediate string orchestras ready to move beyond standard Grade 3 repertoire. This works equally well for a youth orchestra, advanced school ensemble, or community orchestra seeking rewarding Baroque material that audiences adore.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the long lines of the Larghetto with gradual dynamic swells rather than sudden changes; Handel's phrases breathe naturally when the crescendos feel inevitable rather than imposed.
  • Establish a steady harmonic pulse from the continuo voices during the Allegro to anchor the faster-moving material in the upper strings.
  • Balance the dialogue between first and second violins in both movements; these lines are designed to converse, not compete.

How to use it

Pair this as the centerpiece of a Baroque or Handel-focused concert, or use it to bridge between a contemporary opening work and a Romantic closer. It also stands alone as a compelling five-minute offering at a spring concert when rehearsal time is tight.
