About the Composer: Randall Hartsell

Randall Hartsell

Randall Hartsell discovered composition through the intersection of literature and music. In high school, he drew inspiration from texts studied in English class, translating narrative and emotion into piano pieces. He also wrote arrangements for his school choir's radio broadcasts, establishing an early pattern of writing music grounded in immediate musical needs rather than abstract ambition.

After earning his degree from East Carolina University, Hartsell began teaching in a small town and returned to composition with renewed purpose. A formative meeting with publisher Lynn Freeman Olson in the early 1980s opened doors; his first major publication, the three-book series Something Special (1990), launched a prolific career. More than 60 collections and solos followed. Today, based in Charlotte, North Carolina, Hartsell remains active as a teacher, clinician, church musician, and accompanist, bringing decades of classroom experience to every piece he writes.

Why we love this

Hartsell has an instinct for what engages young pianists without condescending to them. Ladybug Morning captures genuine musical interest through programmatic storytelling and accessible voicings, making it rewarding both to teach and to play.

What to expect

This piece unfolds like a gentle storybook page, with musical gestures that evoke the small movements and quiet determination of a ladybug navigating its morning world. The writing is lyrical and accessible, inviting students to find musicality within straightforward technical demands.

Who it's for

Early intermediate pianists ready to tackle modest technical challenges while exploring programmatic thinking. Students benefit from the contained two-page format, which allows them to see a complete musical narrative without feeling overwhelmed.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the phrase contours as if narrating the ladybug's journey; resist playing it too literally or mechanically.
  • Attend to the dynamic markings as essential to character rather than ornamental details.
  • Balance any hand-crossing passages with clear spatial awareness so the audience hears two distinct melodic lines.

How to use it

Use this in an early spring recital focused on nature-inspired miniatures, or include it in a progressive lesson series that celebrates younger pianists alongside more advanced performers. The modest length makes it ideal for student showcase concerts or studio events where multiple performers need meaningful material.

Skills your students will build

  • Programmatic interpretation and connecting imagery to musical gesture
  • Hand independence in crossing or divided passagework
  • Phrase shaping and dynamic control
  • Sustaining musical interest across a complete short form
