More about this title

About the Composer: Cesare Pugni

Cesare Pugni (1802-1870) was an Italian composer who became one of the most prolific ballet composers of the 19th century. He spent much of his career in Russia, where his gift for melody and theatrical orchestration made him the favorite composer of the Imperial Ballet. Pugni wrote over 100 ballets and numerous other theatrical works, establishing himself as a master of the form during an era when ballet music was as essential to a production's success as the dancing itself.

Pugni's approach to ballet composition balanced accessibility with sophistication. His melodies were immediately memorable yet harmonically interesting, his orchestrations clear yet colorful. These qualities made his works enduringly popular in Russia and Eastern Europe, where many of his ballets remain in active repertoire today.

Why we love this

The Pas de Deux from La Esmeralda remains one of the most frequently performed selections from 19th-century ballet literature, and for good reason. Pugni's writing combines elegant, singable melodies with orchestration that gives every section of the orchestra something musically substantive to do, making rehearsals rewarding even as your ensemble prepares for a ballet performance. This McDermott orchestration captures the romantic sparkle of the original while remaining entirely playable by school and community orchestras.

What to expect

The Pas de Deux glows with romantic lyricism and theatrical elegance. Pugni's orchestration moves effortlessly between intimate moments highlighted by the principals and full orchestral statements that celebrate Esmeralda's grace and spirit. The overall character is lyrical and graceful without sentimentality, maintaining the poise and refinement expected of classical ballet music.

Who it's for

This conductor score is designed for orchestras performing ballet, whether for a full production of La Esmeralda, a mixed ballet gala, or a concert program featuring ballet excerpts. It suits intermediate to advanced ensembles that have experience with 19th-century ballet scoring and can manage the standard full orchestral instrumentation required here.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the principal melodic line with consistent forward motion; resist the urge to linger on sustained notes, as Pugni's accompaniment patterns are designed to drive the phrase toward the next structural point.
  • Balance the harp part carefully in both the tutti sections and the quieter moments; it functions as both harmonic anchor and textural color, and should never disappear into the ensemble.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment (available separately) in early rehearsals to establish the tempo and character before sectional work begins.
  • Emphasize the rhythmic precision of the lower strings and timpani, as they anchor the dancers' timing throughout the movement.

How to use it

This excerpt works beautifully as the centerpiece of a ballet-focused concert or as part of a mixed program featuring other 19th-century classical repertoire. It also serves well in educational settings where students are learning to accompany dance or studying the intersection of music and choreography. Consider pairing it with other selections from the Kalmus Ballet Library to build a coherent program.
