Dave Brubeck

Dave Brubeck built his reputation as a jazz pianist with an exceptional ear for improvisation, but his creative reach extended far beyond the jazz club. He spent decades composing across genres, choral works, orchestral pieces, chamber music, and large-scale works for chorus and orchestra, all while maintaining his standing as a recording artist. His 1959 album "Time Out" became the first jazz record to sell over a million copies, and "Take Five" remains one of the most recognizable jazz compositions ever written.

Brubeck studied composition with Darius Milhaud at Mills College after World War II, and Milhaud's influence encouraged him to weave together jazz language and classical forms throughout his career. Beyond his musical output, Brubeck was a trailblazer in breaking racial barriers in mid-twentieth-century America. His sacred works, including the mass "To Hope!" and oratorios recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra, demonstrate the depth of his compositional ambition. He received the Presidential Medal of the Arts from President Clinton and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, among numerous other recognitions.
