About the Composer: Anne Shannon Demarest

Anne Shannon Demarest

Anne Shannon Demarest has composed over 200 piano works that span elementary through advanced levels, earning recognition in Who's Who of American Women, International Who's Who in Music, and Who's Who in the West. Between 1971 and 1977, she received the Special Individual Merit Award from the National Federation of Music Clubs for her contributions to music education.

Demarest's travel across Asia, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Iceland, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean with her husband Steve informed much of her compositional voice. Active in the Society of Colorado Composers, the National Music Teachers Association, and Delta Omicron International Music Fraternity, she has performed recitals in Sweden, Canada, Australia, and Denmark. In addition to her work as a pianist and composer, Demarest is also a published poet.

Why we love this

Kangaroo Bounce captures the playful energy young pianists crave while staying firmly grounded in solid fundamental technique. Demarest's gift for writing accessible character pieces shines here; the piece feels like a genuine musical idea rather than an exercise in disguise.

What to expect

Playful and energetic, with the kind of rhythmic spring that makes you want to move along with the music. The piece channels the lighthearted spirit of its title, inviting performers to find joy in the physicality of playing.

Who it's for

Elementary pianists building confidence with character pieces that deliver immediate musical satisfaction. Students at this level benefit from repertoire that pairs engaging titles with straightforward technique, making practice sessions feel more like storytelling than drills.

How to get the most out of it

  • Keep the tempo light and bouncy without rushing; think of the hopping motion as a guide to phrasing rather than an excuse to speed up.
  • Shape each phrase with subtle dynamic swells to give the bounce rhythmic life and prevent the piece from sounding mechanical.
  • Let the hands work together as a team; balance the melody so it sings over any accompaniment patterns without drowning them out.

How to use it

Program this in a studio recital or school concert where it works as a bridge between foundational pieces and more elaborate works. Its short length and immediate charm make it ideal for the middle student on a mixed-level recital.

Skills your students will build

  • Rhythmic precision and steady pulse maintenance
  • Articulation and staccato touch
