Byron Smith has spent decades bridging the worlds of classical choral music and commercial music production. A Los Angeles native and California State University alumnus, he serves as an associate professor at Los Angeles Harbor College, where he teaches everything from music business fundamentals to vocal performance and arranging. His studio work has put him in rooms with artists spanning jazz legends, Broadway icons, and contemporary R&B musicians, experience that informs every piece he writes.

Smith founded Onyx Music Publishing to share his choral compositions with singers across the country and beyond. His ensemble, The Spirit Chorale of Los Angeles, has championed the Negro spiritual and related repertoire for over two decades. As National President of the National Association of Negro Musicians and music director at Grant A.M.E. Church in Los Angeles, Smith remains deeply committed to the cultural and educational mission of music in the Black church and American concert life.
