About the Composer: John Jacobson

John Jacobson

John Jacobson has spent decades building bridges between music education and community impact. A Point of Light award recipient from President George Bush, he founded America Sings! Inc. to engage young performers in combining their musical talents with service learning. His credentials include a bachelor's degree in Music Education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Master's in Liberal Studies from Georgetown University.

Jacobson's compositional and editorial reach spans generations of music educators and students. He has authored musicals and choral works performed by millions of young singers worldwide, contributed 19 years of content to Music Express Magazine, and directed massive festival ensembles for Walt Disney Productions, including performances at presidential inaugurations and NBC's Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade broadcast. Today he leads JJ and Me, Inc., and maintains publishing partnerships with E.C. Schirmer and Alfred Publications.

Why we love this

Jacobson and Purifoy tap into something universally funny: the modern coffee shop menu paralysis that every adult in your audience has experienced. The novelty jazz setting gives you permission to be playful with your choir's delivery, and the approximately two-minute runtime makes it a perfect warm-up, concert opener, or humor palate-cleanser between heavier selections. Your singers will connect with the relatable subject matter, and that authenticity carries through to a genuinely engaged performance.

What to expect

Upbeat, witty, and tinged with the absurdity of contemporary consumer culture. The jazz setting gives the piece a sophisticated musical foundation that keeps it from feeling childish, even as the subject matter is undeniably comic. Your choir gets to inhabit the role of bewildered coffee customers, which invites personality and spontaneity into the performance.

Who it's for

This works for any choir seeking concert repertoire that entertains without sacrificing musicianship. It lands especially well in programs where you're programming multiple styles or want to showcase your ensemble's versatility in jazz idiom. Community choirs, high school show choirs, and middle school groups all find immediate success with it.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lean into the comic timing. Treat the lyrics like a stand-up routine; pause and emphasize the ridiculous coffee jargon choices to land the humor.
  • Let the rhythm section drive the groove consistently. The instrumentation anchors the novelty, so make sure your accompaniment is locked in before focusing on vocal delivery.
  • Shape the vocal lines with conversational phrasing rather than legit choir tone. Think spoken delivery set to melody, which keeps the piece from feeling overwrought.
  • Encourage physicality and facial expression. A coffee-ordering piece invites choreography or at minimum active engagement that mirrors the confusion of the lyrics.

How to use it

Open a concert with this piece to set a fun tone and put your audience at ease. It also serves beautifully as a palate-cleanser between a ballad and a heavier choral work, or as part of a themed set of novelty pieces that showcase different musical styles. Consider pairing it with other Jacobson pop or jazz arrangements to build a cohesive set.
