Description
This series of storybooks for elementary school children introduces students to important musical works through imaginative adventure stories. Teachers can either read the story whilst playing the CD to help evoke the soundscapes of the music. Alternatively, once students are familiar with the story they can simply listen and look at the pictures. This is ideal for use as part of an integrated scheme of work for art music and literacy this is a very approachable resource for non-specialists.

During their exploration of the beach Ollie and his friends discover Jupiter Cove. As they clamber up the high rocks, unaware of the dangers of the tide, giant sea horses appear and direct them away from the rushing water to a place of safety. It is from here that the children watch the magical song and dance of the sea horses. This story introduces 'Jupiter' from The Planets by Gustav Holst.

More about this title

About the Author: Ann Bryant

Ann Bryant is an author and educator whose work bridges music and storytelling for young learners. Her approach treats classical music not as distant or formal, but as a living landscape that children can explore through narrative and imagination.

Why we love this

This resource solves a genuine classroom challenge: how to introduce serious orchestral music to students without lecture or passive listening. The dual-format design (read aloud with CD, or listen and look independently) respects different classroom rhythms and gives teachers genuine flexibility.

What to expect

A voyage into majesty and wonder. Holst's "Jupiter" swells with noble, almost ceremonial energy; this story frames it as a rescue and revelation, transforming the music's grandeur into protection and magic. The pacing moves from tension (the tide's danger) into awe (the sea horses' dance).

Who it's for

Elementary teachers seeking to integrate listening experiences into literacy, visual art, or general music classes. Non-specialists will find the story does much of the interpretive work, allowing focus on student engagement rather than musical analysis.

How to get the most out of it

  • Read the story expressively and let the CD underscore your pacing. You control the tempo of narration; the music will follow naturally.
  • On second or third encounters, dim the lights and play the CD while students look at the illustrations. This shifts focus entirely to the sound and visual storytelling.
  • Pause at key moments in the narrative to let students predict what happens next before turning the page. It deepens their investment in the musical journey.
  • Play the CD excerpt independently after students know the story. They'll hear Holst's composition with the narrative already alive in their minds.

How to use it

Pair this with visual art projects where students illustrate their own moment from the story, or use it as a cornerstone for a unit on "Music and Story" that includes fairy tales, program music, and student compositions. It works equally well as a standalone assembly or school event presentation.

Skills your students will build

  • Listening for mood and character in orchestral music
  • Connecting narrative structure to musical development
  • Visualizing imagery prompted by instrumental sound
  • Recognizing thematic material (the 'Jupiter' melody) across repeated listening
