About the Arranger: Brian Lewis

Brian Lewis

Brian Lewis studied composition at Baldwin-Wallace Conservatory in Ohio before earning his master's degree in conducting from Western Michigan University. His training spans both traditional choral writing and contemporary media, including completion of USC's prestigious Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television program after teaching in Michigan's public school system. Lewis has served as composer in residence at Portage Northern High School, where ensembles premiered his commissioned work, Sanctus.

Why we love this

Lewis's arrangement captures the infectious energy of a traditional folk tune while keeping the technical demands reasonable for developing choirs. The recorded accompaniment gives you flexibility in rehearsal and performance, whether you're working with limited instrumental resources or want to feature your singers without accompaniment concerns.

What to expect

Unpretentious and joyful, with the straightforward charm of a tune that's traveled through many voices and hands. The arrangement respects the folk roots while giving singers enough harmonic texture to stay engaged.

Who it's for

Any developing to intermediate choir looking for a secular folk arrangement with genuine personality and accessible ranges. This works well for groups seeking repertoire that feels fresh without requiring advanced technical skills.

How to get the most out of it

  • Keep the energy buoyant throughout. This tune thrives on rhythmic vitality, so don't let it sag even in the softer moments.
  • Balance clarity in the text with the folk character of the melody. The arrangement works best when the lyrics land crisply while the overall feel stays conversational.
  • Use the accompaniment as a rehearsal tool to solidify sections independently before full ensemble runs, especially if you have mixed experience levels in your group.

How to use it

Slot this into a concert that celebrates folk traditions or pairs it with other contemporary choral settings of traditional material. Its lighter character makes it an ideal choice for contests where you want to show range beyond serious art song or classical repertoire.

Skills your students will build

  • Maintaining rhythmic precision in folk-style ensemble singing
  • Balancing melody awareness across multiple voice parts
  • Singing with stylistic appropriateness to secular folk idioms
  • Following recorded accompaniment cues in performance
