About the Arranger: Douglas E. Wagner

Douglas E. Wagner trained at Butler University, earning degrees in both composition and music education. His three-decade career as a high school music director and administrator shaped his deep understanding of what works in the rehearsal room, knowledge he now channels into full-time composition and arranging.
Since 1973, Wagner has created over 3,500 published works spanning choral literature, concert band, orchestra, handbell ensemble, and solo vocal and keyboard music. His output has reached millions of musicians worldwide through performances in concert halls, broadcasts, and school programs across the United States and internationally. He lives in Indianapolis with his wife.
Why we love this
Wagner's gift for interweaving multiple carol melodies without sacrificing clarity or pacing makes this medley feel fresh rather than cluttered. The Grade 3 scoring keeps parts playable across your full ensemble while still delivering the richness that an international carol collection deserves, making it equally effective with developing and more experienced bands.
What to expect
The medley opens with French warmth and moves through a succession of beloved melodies, each one emerging naturally from the last. The overall effect is celebratory and spacious, with enough textural variety to sustain listener interest across the full three and a half minutes.
Who it's for
Concert bands at the Grade 3 level seeking a substantial holiday offering that feels sophisticated without excessive technical demands. Directors looking to include lesser-known European carols alongside recognizable English traditions will appreciate the international scope and cohesive arrangement.
How to get the most out of it
- Balance the four melodies so listeners can follow the familiar tunes without any single line dominating the texture; use dynamic control in the middle voices to support rather than overshadow the primary theme.
- Let the French titles and English translations inform your interpretive choices, especially for phrasing and articulation choices that honor the original carol character.
- Take care with transitions between carols so the medley flows naturally; mark conductor cues clearly and rehearse any section transitions independently before running the complete work.
How to use it
Position this as a centerpiece in your winter concert rather than filler; the medley format and length make it a substantial standalone selection that can anchor a holiday set. It also pairs well with shorter carol arrangements or secular seasonal pieces, offering programming flexibility while giving your band a genuinely rewarding showcase.
Skills your students will build
- Balancing melody and accompaniment voices in homophonic textures
- Managing transitions between thematic material within a single work
- Articulation and phrasing choices that support multiple melodic lines
- Sight-reading and part accuracy across a longer form medley
