More about this title

About the Composer: Rossano Galante

Rossano Galante

Rossano Galante studied trumpet performance at SUNY Buffalo before earning acceptance to the prestigious Film Scoring Program at USC in 1992, where he worked under the legendary Jerry Goldsmith. His career has spanned over eighty feature films, collaborating with Oscar-nominated composers and contributing orchestrations to blockbuster franchises including the Marvel universe, Fast & Furious series, and A Quiet Place films.

Beyond film work, Galante maintains an active presence in concert music, with more than 68 published compositions for band and orchestra across major publishers including Alfred, Schirmer, and Curnow. His commissions come from ensembles worldwide, reflecting his ability to write idiomatically for both screen and stage.

Why we love this

Galante brings cinematic storytelling to the concert band medium without sacrificing musical substance. The piece balances showmanship with genuine compositional craft, giving your band a chance to explore film scoring techniques while delivering the kind of audience engagement that makes concert programs memorable.

What to expect

Sweeping and cinematic, this piece unfolds like a film sequence. You hear lush orchestral colors in the midsection, hear the energy build toward the final moments, and feel the pull of a story arc that carries the listener from adventure into triumph.

Who it's for

Grade 5 bands with solid technique and musical maturity. This works best for ensembles that can handle the stylistic range from lyrical to dramatic and maintain control through dynamic shifts.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the opening woodwind flourishes against the brass; these sections need clarity of line rather than blend. The flutes and oboes should cut through without forcing.
  • Shape the middle section's graceful character by allowing slight space in the phrasing. This passage invites legato articulation and controlled dynamics to establish the shift in mood.
  • Coordinate the final drive carefully with your section leaders. The accelerating energy needs rhythmic precision from the rhythm section to land the breathtaking finish with impact.
  • Use the full six minutes to let the narrative arc breathe. Resist the urge to rush; each section's contrasting mood deserves its own time and space.

How to use it

Position this as a concert highlight in a program that celebrates compositional storytelling. It pairs well with other thematic works at the Grade 5 level and gives audiences a clear sense of narrative without requiring prior context or explanation.

Skills your students will build

  • Shaping sustained phrasing across dynamic changes
  • Balancing multiple textural layers (woodwind vs. brass prominence)
  • Responding to cinematic timing and dramatic structure
  • Executing clean articulation in rapid figurative passages
  • Controlling crescendi and decrescendi through extended sections
