More about this title

About the Composer: Kathleen Massoud

Kathleen Massoud

Kathleen Massoud trained in piano performance at Hartt College of Music in Hartford, Connecticut and continued her studies at Longy School of Music in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She co-founded the Massoud Piano Studio in 1980 in New Bedford, Massachusetts, where she has maintained an independent teaching practice for more than two decades.

Massoud serves as an active member of the National Guild of Piano Teachers and has held leadership roles within the Southeastern Chapter of the Massachusetts Music Teachers Association. Beyond her studio work, she sings in her church choir, contributes volunteer service to her faith community, and expresses her artistic voice through poetry.

Why we love this

Massoud writes with a pianist's practical understanding of what early intermediate players can execute musically. The piece balances accessible technique with genuine narrative arc, so students feel they're interpreting a story rather than drilling exercises.

What to expect

The piece carries a sense of exploration and discovery, evoking the gradual revelation of an oasis emerging from a desert landscape. Rhythmic and harmonic elements suggest both the challenge of the journey and moments of respite, creating dynamic interest that holds a listener's attention across four pages.

Who it's for

Early intermediate pianists ready to move beyond simple melody-with-accompaniment structures into pieces with richer harmonic vocabulary and programmatic intent. Students who respond well to visual or narrative prompts will connect with this piece's evocative title and the journey it unfolds.

How to get the most out of it

  • Map the harmonic progression before diving into fingerings; knowing where tonal centers shift will guide your phrasing choices and prevent the piece from sounding like isolated passages.
  • Practice the accompaniment patterns separately until they become tactile memory, freeing your attention for the melodic line and its dynamic shape.
  • Listen for moments where the texture thins or thickens; these changes reflect the journey's emotional landscape and deserve intentional tempo and color adjustments.

How to use it

This works well in a solo recital where you want to showcase student growth and musical maturity without demanding advanced virtuosity. It also pairs naturally in a concert themed around travel, nature, or student composition, offering a bridge between early and intermediate repertoire that feels substantial without being overwhelming.

Skills your students will build

  • Sustaining musical narrative across a multi-section form
  • Balancing melody and accompaniment texture
  • Interpreting harmonic rhythm and tonal color
  • Managing dynamic shape and phrasing in thematic material
  • Coordinating hand independence with equal technical security
