About the Composer: Jordan Sterk

Jordan Sterk

Jordan Sterk holds a Bachelor of Music Education from Michigan State University, where he studied tuba and euphonium with Professor Philip Sinder and composition with Associate Professor John T. Madden. His training in both performance and educational leadership shaped his approach to writing music that students can engage with meaningfully.

Sterk teaches band at all levels in Owosso, Michigan, and composes and arranges regularly for his own students and programs. His work reflects a deep understanding of what young musicians need to succeed: music that is technically accessible but musically rewarding, and arrangements that respect both the capabilities and the imaginations of developing players.

Why we love this

Sterk crafts a narrative arc that holds student attention from start to finish without requiring advanced technical facility. The piece balances straightforward part writing with enough musical storytelling to make rehearsals engaging, and the Grade 1.5 scoring ensures nearly every section has something meaningful to play rather than sustained notes or rests.

What to expect

The music evokes the romance and adventure of early railroad travel, with descriptive moments that suggest the Yukon landscape and the steady, rhythmic progress of the train itself. Sterk's orchestration keeps the texture transparent so that every instrument contributes to the storytelling without overwhelming the ensemble's technical capacity.

Who it's for

This piece works for Grade 1.5 concert bands seeking repertoire with character and a clear dramatic arc. It's ideal for groups preparing for festival competition or a concert program that needs a vivid, story-based selection that audiences will follow easily.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the opening to build momentum gradually as the locomotive builds steam; resist the urge to rush the early sections, as the energy comes from articulation clarity and ensemble precision, not tempo.
  • Balance the scenic passages so that quieter moments feel reflective rather than tentative. Young bands sometimes retreat when dynamics drop; encourage them to maintain confidence and tone quality at softer volumes.
  • Use the contest/festival context as motivation during rehearsal. Framing this as a performance piece rather than just a reading session helps students commit to their parts and listen more critically to blend.

How to use it

Program this as a signature piece during a themed concert or festival round. At 2:20, it fits naturally between a warm-up opener and a more technically demanding work, and the journey narrative often resonates with audiences of all ages. It's also strong material for mid-year rehearsals when bands have developed ensemble awareness but haven't yet mastered complex rhythmic or harmonic material.

Skills your students will build

  • Maintaining steady tempo through narrative pacing changes
  • Balancing part clarity in transparent orchestration
  • Shaping dynamics to support musical storytelling
  • Responding to conductor cues that indicate scene or mood shifts
  • Blending articulation styles across the ensemble
