Description
The title SNARE BOOK tells its own tale: This book is exclusively about snare exercises that will improve your hand technique and your general understanding of rhythm at the same time. Additionally, playing these exercises using different subdivisions and time signatures will further strengthen your rhythmic overview and will make the exercises more interesting and less repetitive. «I usually don‘t enjoy exercises where I have to play the same thing over and over again.» says Jost. «My mind wanders off, and I find it a lot harder to keep practicing because of the lack of variation. As much as I agree that practice is repetition, I also never want to get bored when I practice.» The first chapter of this book offers a wide range of great warm-up exercises that combine well-known stickings with accentuations, subdivisions, or time signatures that are unusual for these stickings. Additionally, you‘ll find Ostinato exercises to strengthen your independence and Interlocking exercises to improve your coordination. «My SNARE BOOK is definitely NOT your typical rudiments book.» adds Jost. «I am confident that the exercises in this book are enjoyable and useful because they offer variations on different levels that will keep you engaged. That makes it easier to play the many repetitions you need to get better.» The other chapters take a very systematic approach where Jost takes you step-by-step through different exercises on Double-Stroke Rolls, Flams, Multiple Strokes, Ruffs, Inverted Double-Stroke Rolls, Paradiddles, and more. One of the benefits of the book is that once you have understood the conceptual approach you‘ll be able to create your own exercises. You simply keep the concepts but change the content, either on your snare drum or on your drum pad. A 12-page insert containing Reading Texts completes the concept of this book.

About the Composer: Jost Nickel

Jost Nickel

Jost Nickel represents a generation of German drummers reshaping contemporary percussion performance and pedagogy. Since his international debut as a clinician at Montreal Drum Fest in 2010, he has performed at PASIC, the Namm Show, Meinl Drum Festival, and the London Drum Show, earning recognition as one of Modern Drummer Magazine's "Best Clinicians" in 2016 and landing on MusicRadar's list of the world's top 10 drum clinicians in both 2016 and 2017. His session and touring work spans hit records across multiple continents, and his 2006 position in Jan Delay & Disko No.1 placed him in a German supergroup whose albums consistently reached number one on the charts.

Nickel studied at Drummers Collective in New York and currently serves as a tutor at the University of Pop in Mannheim. He is known for his articulate, punchy sound paired with sophisticated cymbal textures that balance precision with musicality. Beyond touring and recording, he has authored three best-selling method books through Alfred Music: Jost Nickel's Groove Book (2015), Jost Nickel's Fill Book (2017), and Jost Nickel's Snare Book (2019), establishing himself as an educator committed to making practice engaging rather than monotonous.

Why we love this

Nickel refuses to treat exercises as mindless repetition. Every section layers variations in stickings, subdivisions, accentuations, and time signatures so players stay mentally engaged while building genuine technique, which means students actually finish the practice session instead of checking out halfway through. The systematic progression from warm-ups through double-stroke rolls, flams, multiple strokes, ruffs, and inverted figures gives teachers a roadmap that works for all levels, and the ostinato and interlocking chapters build independence and coordination without feeling like a slog.

What to expect

Purposeful and thoughtful rather than mechanical. Each exercise feels like a puzzle with multiple entry points: you can focus on the sticking one day, the accentuation the next, or push yourself into an unusual time signature to keep your mind sharp and your hands responsive.

Who it's for

Snare drummers of any level who want to move beyond conventional warm-up patterns and develop genuine rhythmic understanding alongside hand technique. This book works equally well for middle school students building foundational skills and advanced players seeking deeper control and independence.

How to get the most out of it

  • Vary your tempo and subdivision approach with each exercise rather than playing the book sequentially. Return to earlier exercises at faster speeds or with different time signatures once you've learned the basic sticking to keep your brain engaged and deepen your understanding of how each pattern functions rhythmically.
  • Use a drum pad for the early warm-up and technique chapters to develop clean hand geometry and stick control, then transition to snare drum to integrate dynamics, resonance, and rebound into your playing.
  • Identify which stickings or rudiments challenge your independence most, then spend focused time on those ostinato and interlocking exercises to build coordination between your hands before pushing tempo.

How to use it

Assign chapters systematically throughout the year as part of regular technique development, pulling exercises into sectional rehearsals to address specific hand coordination challenges your percussion section faces. The warm-up chapter works particularly well as the foundation for a daily practice routine, while the specialized rudiment chapters provide targeted work when a particular passage in your repertoire demands precision on flams, rolls, or multiple strokes.

Skills your students will build

  • Hand technique and stick control across standard and unconventional stickings
  • Reading mixed time signatures (primarily 2/4, 4/4, 3/4, and 5/4) with consistent rhythmic clarity
  • Double-stroke roll control and evenness at varying tempos
  • Flam execution with proper grace note weight and clarity
  • Hand independence through ostinato exercises
  • Coordination through interlocking patterns
  • Accentuation control and dynamic placement
  • Rhythmic understanding through subdivision practice
