Description
This book is for anybody who wants to discover the big, wide world of drum fills. You‘ll find plenty of fill concepts to inspire you and enable you to understand the essential theory behind them so you can create your own drum fills. Step by step, Jost introduces rhythmic concepts that can be used universally on different levels and in every musical situation. He presents orchestration ideas, phrasings, and exercises focusing on dynamics and accents. He shows the different subdivisions that are essential for drum-fill playing and fills for binary and ternary grooves such as shuffles. Ideas on switch & path orchestration, diddle kicks, and clockwise & counterclockwise playing will enrich your drumming, as will step-hit-hi-hat, hand & foot rolls, cymbal chokes, stick shots, and many more. The JOST NICKEL‘S FILL BOOK comes with an MP3 CD so you can hear many of the recorded fills in different tempos. Additionally, for those fills where you need to see how to move, there are twenty videos online. A 12-page insert containing reading texts completes the concept of this book. Jost and Alfred Music wish you a lot of fun and success with the JOST NICKEL‘S FILL BOOK. ANIKA NILLES, famous female drummer, says about Jost's fill book: "A great book for all of us ... I find Jost‘s fill book very inspiring for my own playing and I highly recommend it!" MATT HALPERN, voted as "The Best Metal Drummer" by Modern Drummer magazine: "One of the things I love most about Jost‘s playing is his approach to drum fills. His use of flams, cymbal accents, and melodic placements are just a few components that make his musical style so exciting to see and hear." MIKE JOHNSTON, Clinician/Educator of the Year 2016: "Jost is teaching you the deeper concepts that allow the fills to exist in the first place. Amazing book by a world class player!" CHRIS COLEMAN, drummer with Prince, Chaka Khan, and many more: "Not only is Jost one of my favorite humans, he‘s a methodical and practical BEAST of a Musician & Drummer. This book will show you ALL of that."

More about this title

About the Author: Jost Nickel

Jost Nickel

Jost Nickel represents a generation of German drummers redefining contemporary drumset playing. As a session and touring musician, he has appeared on numerous charting records and performs at the highest levels of the profession. His international profile as a clinician began with the Montreal Drum Fest in 2010 and has since expanded to PASIC, the Namm Show, Meinl Drum Festival, and drum festivals across Europe and the UK. Modern Drummer Magazine nominated him Best Clinician in 2016, and he landed on MusicRadar's list of the world's ten best drum clinicians in both 2016 and 2017.

Nickel plays with German supergroup Jan Delay & Disko No.1, whose releases consistently top the German charts. He studied at Drummers Collective in New York and currently teaches at the University of Pop in Mannheim. His three instructional books through Alfred Music have become standards for drummers across all levels. Known for a punchy, articulate sound paired with sophisticated cymbal textures, Nickel combines pocket-driven grooves with harmonic sophistication and technical precision.

Why we love this

Nickel's approach moves beyond pattern collection into genuine fill architecture. The book methodically builds from foundational subdivisions and orchestration concepts, giving drummers a framework to compose rather than memorize. The inclusion of video demonstrations for technique-intensive material (like diddle kicks and counterclockwise playing) bridges the gap between notation and physical execution in a way that text alone cannot.

What to expect

This book speaks the language of a working session and touring drummer. The fills are crafted with musicality and pocket awareness, not just technical flash. You'll find ideas that feel immediately usable alongside concepts that challenge you to expand your coordination and creative thinking.

Who it's for

Intermediate to advanced drummers who want to move beyond stock fills and develop a personal vocabulary grounded in solid technique and theory. Teachers and clinicians looking for a structured resource to guide students toward creative, musically intelligent fill playing will find a comprehensive framework here. Any drummer serious about understanding the mechanics of fill construction will benefit from Nickel's systematic approach.

How to get the most out of it

  • Work through the MP3 examples at the slower tempos first to lock the subdivisions and phrasing before attempting faster versions.
  • Pay close attention to the dynamics and accent markings in each fill; Nickel's writing relies on contrast and articulation to make fills sit musically in a groove.
  • Use the online videos for fills involving hand and foot coordination or unconventional stick shots; watching the motion clarifies what the page notation represents.
  • Isolate individual orchestration concepts (switch and path, diddle kicks, clockwise and counterclockwise) and practice them as foundational exercises before applying them to complete fills.

How to use it

Assign chapters progressively as students advance beyond basic groove playing and prepare for ensemble or solo performance contexts. The book functions equally well as a semester-long study or as a reference resource for specific coordination challenges that arise during ensemble rehearsals. Use the video demonstrations in group settings or one-on-one lessons to demystify techniques that students find difficult to visualize from notation alone.

Skills your students will build

  • Understanding subdivisions and their application to different metric feels (binary and ternary grooves, shuffles)
  • Orchestration and voice distribution across the drumset
  • Dynamic control and accent placement within fills
  • Coordination patterns including diddle kicks, hand and foot rolls, and unconventional stick techniques
  • Phrasing concepts that connect fills musically to the groove
  • Reading and executing complex rhythmic notation with multiple sticking and pedal patterns
