Description
Jost Nickel’s BEGINNER BOOK is perfect if you want to start or restart playing the drums and like to work PRACTICALLY. We’ve cut out long theory explanations and replaced them with helpful tips on HOW TO SET UP your drumset, and the techniques you need to play complete grooves right away. Step by step, you’ll learn the corresponding music notation and you can listen to all exercises thanks to the ONLINE audio examples recorded by Jost himself. With gradually increasing levels of difficulty you will; practice FILLS in different note values; play DUETS with a friend, your teacher or the corresponding ONLINE AUDIO TRACKS; and internalize various important PLAYING TECHNIQUES, such as GHOST NOTES, CROSS STICK, and RIMSHOTS. As you progress, you will naturally train your COORDINATION and TIMING, learn important standard patterns and develop an understanding of musical structures. The BEGINNER BOOK is well rounded off with Jost’s tips for effective practicing and several playlists with song examples for different playing techniques. "I wrote this book for newcomers and those who want to start again. I am confident that it is extremely suitable for use in lessons because of its practical approach” and "the playing technique needed to play the first rhythms is explained quickly and is intuitive for the most part. The challenge is rather to coordinate the different limbs”, Jost states.

About the Composer: Jost Nickel

Jost Nickel

Jost Nickel is a working session and touring drummer from Germany who has reshaped contemporary drumming through both his playing and teaching. A clinician at major festivals including Montreal Drum Fest, PASIC, NAMM, and the London Drum Show, he has recorded on numerous chart-topping releases and performed extensively with Jan Delay & Disko No.1. Modern Drummer Magazine nominated him Best Clinician in 2016, and MusicRadar named him among the 10 best drum clinicians in the world in both 2016 and 2017.

Nickel studied at Drummers Collective in New York and currently teaches at the University of Pop in Mannheim. His distinctive approach balances punchy, articulate snare and kick work with a warm, jazzy cymbal sound. Beyond his touring and session work, he has authored three best-selling books through Alfred Music: Groove Book, Fill Book, and Snare Book, each written to serve drummers across all skill levels.

Why we love this

This book cuts through the clutter by prioritizing what beginners actually need: how to physically set up their kit, how to execute a groove from lesson one, and how to coordinate their limbs effectively. The inclusion of Jost's own recorded audio tracks makes self-teaching and lesson prep genuinely efficient, while the duet exercises and practical playing techniques (ghost notes, cross-stick, rimshots) build real musicianship rather than abstract rudiments. Teachers will appreciate the structured difficulty progression and the playlists that contextualize each technique within actual musical styles.

What to expect

Working through this book feels like having a professional drummer in the room showing you exactly what to do, not just telling you. The progression from simple grooves to coordinated fills with ghost notes and stylistic techniques builds confidence quickly, and the audio tracks anchor every exercise in real sound rather than leaving you guessing about how it should feel.

Who it's for

Beginner drummers starting their journey or returning to drums after a break will find this book cuts through unnecessary theory and gets you playing grooves immediately. Teachers introducing students to kit playing will appreciate the practical setup guidance and clear notation explanations that make lessons more efficient. Jost designed this specifically for people who learn by doing rather than reading extended explanations.

How to get the most out of it

  • Set up your kit exactly as explained in the opening chapters before starting exercises. Your comfort and reach directly affect how quickly you'll internalize the techniques Jost teaches.
  • Use the online audio tracks to internalize the groove feel and timing; play along repeatedly until your coordination with the recordings becomes automatic.
  • When practicing duets with a teacher or friend, focus on locking your kick and snare pattern first, then add the hi-hat layer once that foundation is solid.
  • Record yourself practicing fills and compare your sound to the audio examples. This develops your ear for timing and helps you hear coordination issues you might miss in the moment.

How to use it

Use this book as your primary curriculum for beginner group drum classes or as a starting point for private students moving from mallets or band snare to full kit. The structured exercises work well alongside ensemble rehearsals, giving students focused practice material that complements what they're learning in an ensemble context. The playlists at the end suggest real musical applications, making it easy to show students why these grooves and techniques matter beyond the practice room.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading drumset notation and coordinating sticking patterns across hand and foot
  • Executing fundamental grooves in various feels and time signatures
  • Playing ghost notes, cross-stick, and rimshot techniques with control
  • Coordination between kick, snare, and hi-hat in increasingly complex patterns
  • Timing accuracy and pocket development through duet and audio track playalong
  • Fill construction and transitions between grooves
  • Effective practice strategies and self-assessment
