About the Arranger: Carrie Lane Gruselle

Carrie Lane Gruselle

Carrie Lane Gruselle combines deep training in both music education and the Suzuki pedagogy with hands-on classroom experience. She earned her Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire and her Master's degree from the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point, where she specialized in Suzuki methodology.

Gruselle brings her expertise directly into the classroom as the elementary and middle school strings instructor for the Appleton Area School District, while also teaching cello privately through the Lawrence University Arts Academy in Appleton, Wisconsin. Her work reflects a commitment to making string music accessible and engaging for young players.

Why we love this

Gruselle's arrangement strips away the folk song's simplicity without losing its soul. The "bluesy" character she infuses throughout gives Grade 2 players something genuinely musically rewarding to explore, and the creative part writing ensures every section stays engaged rather than relegated to rhythmic accompaniment.

What to expect

The arrangement wraps the familiar "John Henry" legend in a bluesy, slightly edgy sound that feels both earthy and refined. Students encounter harmonic colors and rhythmic textures that feel modern while honoring the song's American roots.

Who it's for

This arrangement suits Grade 2 string orchestras ready to experience folk material with musical sophistication. It works equally well for festival programs or general concert repertoire where directors want their students to tackle something with genuine character and creative arranging choices.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the melodic line with subtle dynamic swells in the violin sections; the folk character comes alive when phrasing breathes naturally rather than sitting flat.
  • Balance the blues inflections by listening closely to how the lower strings support the harmonic color. These moments define the arrangement's character.
  • Encourage students to listen for how Gruselle uses rhythmic interplay between sections. Clean ensemble work in these handoff moments makes the arrangement sparkle.

How to use it

This piece fits naturally into Americana-themed concerts or folk music units where you want to show students how skilled arranging transforms traditional material. It also serves as an excellent festival selection because it challenges young orchestras musically without demanding virtuosic technical chops.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and playing blues-influenced harmonic progressions
  • Balancing melody against rhythmically active accompaniment figures
  • Executing dynamic shaping within a folk song structure
  • Responding to arranging choices that add color and complexity to familiar melodies
