About the Arranger: Mark Williams

Mark Williams built his reputation on writing music that speaks directly to school band programs. With over 200 published compositions and co-authorship of the Accent on Achievement Band Method, he shaped how generations of young musicians learned and performed.
Williams spent his career in Washington state, where he specialized in elementary band instruction and developed a distinctive voice for young ensembles. His work as a clinician and guest conductor took him across North America and to Australia, while his own performing life included bassoon recitals and leadership of the Spokane British Brass Band. His compositions earned recognition through the Western International Band Clinic's Gralia Competition and multiple ASCAP Special Awards.
Why we love this
Williams captures the comedic potential of the band arrangement without sacrificing musicianship. The swing-era rhythmic foundation gives your percussion section genuine material to sink their teeth into, while the Grade 1.5 scoring keeps it accessible for younger groups without feeling condescending.
What to expect
Picture a 1930s jazz club suddenly transported to the North Pole. Christmas carols swagger and sway over a jumping bass line and driving drums, creating a musical wink that audiences immediately recognize and enjoy. The energy is playful, the style is swinging, and the effect is genuinely entertaining.
Who it's for
This arrangement works for Grade 1.5 concert bands looking to program something festive that engages audiences without requiring advanced technique. Conductors seeking to showcase percussion prowess while keeping the overall difficulty manageable will find a solid choice here.
How to get the most out of it
- Lock the bass line and drum kit groove early in rehearsal; once that swing foundation is solid, the entire arrangement locks into place
- Shape the Christmas carol melodies with clear articulation and dynamic contrast to highlight the humor of the juxtaposition
- Balance the percussion features carefully so they drive the arrangement without overpowering the wind lines
- Lean into the comedic timing by letting the rhythm section breathe slightly and settle each phrase before moving forward
How to use it
This lands perfectly as a lighter complement to more serious holiday fare on a winter concert. Its Grade 1.5 accessibility pairs well with groups working through standard repertoire, and the percussion feature gives musicians usually in supporting roles a genuine moment to shine.
Skills your students will build
- Reading and executing swing rhythms accurately
- Balancing melody against rhythmic accompaniment
- Understanding jazz and swing style conventions
- Ensemble coordination between pitched and unpitched percussion
- Articulation and phrasing in a contemporary idiom
