About the Arranger: Bob Phillips

Bob Phillips (b. 1953) has shaped string education through decades of classroom innovation and prolific composition. A conductor, pedagogue, and author, he developed the widely used Sound Innovations series across all six levels and created groundbreaking eclectic style publications including Fiddlers Philharmonic, Jazz Philharmonic, and Rock Philharmonic. Over 200 of his works have been published for orchestras and bands, and his pieces are performed annually by thousands of string students worldwide.
During 27 years leading the string program in Saline, Michigan, Phillips built a nationally recognized model serving over 700 students in both classical and contemporary styles. He has guest conducted all-state orchestras across multiple states, served as resident conductor for the Wintergrass Festival in Seattle, and received recognition as an ASCAP award-winning composer. His instructional DVDs, String Clinics to Go, have become teaching resources in countless studios and rehearsal rooms.
Why we love this
This piece solves a universal challenge: how to honor bass players without overwhelming them musically. The simplicity of the bass line lets players focus on ensemble responsibility and intonation while the jingle bells surprise transforms them from background support into the feature event. Your orchestras will remember this one, and your bass section will feel genuinely celebrated.
What to expect
A playful surprise wrapped in familiar melody. The piece opens with classic holiday charm, then shifts focus to the bass section as they suddenly produce jingles, turning a typically accompanying voice into the moment of delight. It combines the warmth of traditional string writing with genuine joy.
Who it's for
Grade 1 string orchestras seeking a confidence-building feature for developing bass players. Teachers managing mixed-level ensembles will appreciate writing that keeps lower voices accessible while building their ownership in the group.
How to get the most out of it
- Hide hand bells on each bass stand before the performance begins; coordinate the reveal moment with your bassists during rehearsal so the surprise timing feels natural and unified.
- Encourage creative staging around the bass section: Santa hats, lights on the instruments, or costume elements draw the audience's attention to the players before the bells emerge.
- Keep the bass line steady and intonation-focused during the opening; the simpler the playing, the more important tuning becomes to the overall sound.
How to use it
Pair this with a more serious winter or holiday concert opener to create contrast and keep audience engagement high. The novelty element and bass feature make it an ideal choice for mid-concert breaks or to conclude a holiday program on a high-spirited note that audiences will discuss long after the final jingle.
