About the Arranger: June C. Montgomery

June C. Montgomery

June C. Montgomery earned her degree from Florida State University and has spent more than two decades teaching private piano students while also serving as an elementary school music educator. Her work in the classroom earned her recognition as an Outstanding Elementary Teacher of America and membership in Delta Kappa Gamma.

Montgomery has established herself as a prolific composer and arranger for Alfred Publishing Company, creating numerous piano solos and comprehensive educational resources including the FUNdamental Musicianship Skills series, the Piano Camp series, and Theory Through the Year for Alfred's Basic Piano Library. She has collaborated with respected educators Maurice Hinson and Martha Mier on additional instructional materials, presented clinics at district and state conventions throughout Florida and beyond, and remains active as a church pianist and children's choir director. She serves as carillonneur at the Stephen Foster Memorial.

Why we love this

Montgomery's arrangement captures the tenderness and accessibility of this beloved hymn without oversimplifying it. Early intermediate pianists get a piece that feels substantial and rewarding to perform, with enough musical interest to sustain audience attention while remaining well within technical reach.

What to expect

Warm and direct, this arrangement speaks the language of the familiar tune while adding gentle harmonic depth beneath it. The musical character remains sincere and accessible, inviting performers to play with genuine expression rather than technical bravura.

Who it's for

Early intermediate pianists encountering this timeless hymn tune will find an arrangement that respects both the melody's spiritual weight and their developing technical skills. This piece works equally well for students in private lessons, school music programs, or community recital settings.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the melody so it sings clearly while maintaining steady harmonic support underneath. Avoid letting the accompaniment overwhelm the tune.
  • Find a tempo that allows the melody to breathe naturally. Resist the urge to rush; this piece benefits from a gentle, unhurried pace.
  • Listen to the harmonic movement beneath the familiar melody. Notice where Montgomery's arrangement shifts the accompaniment and let those moments shape your phrasing.

How to use it

Include this in a sacred or seasonal recital, or pair it with other spiritual hymn arrangements for a cohesive thematic program. It also makes an excellent addition to spring or Easter concerts where community familiarity with the tune enhances the performance.

Skills your students will build

  • Playing sustained harmonic accompaniment while maintaining melodic independence
  • Shaping a simple, well-known melody with phrase awareness and dynamic control
  • Balancing right and left hand voices in proper proportion
  • Recognizing and interpreting harmonic progressions within a familiar tonal framework
