About the Arranger: Donald Moore

Donald Moore

Donald Moore earned degrees in organ performance and music teaching from Kent State University and has established himself as one of the most prolific contributors to American choral literature. His catalog exceeds 500 published works across sacred, secular, educational, and popular styles, distributed through major publishers including Alfred Music, Hal Leonard, and Heritage Music Press. His arrangements and compositions regularly appear at state and national festivals and have earned him seventeen ASCAP Composers Standard Awards.

Moore serves as Organist-Choirmaster at Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Ohio and has been recognized by the American Choral Directors Association as one of 400 composers of historical significance in American choral music. His work spans multiple genres and skill levels, reflecting both his deep musical training and his understanding of what makes music engaging for performing ensembles.

Why we love this

Moore brings a gift for mixing accessibility with musical substance. This arrangement honors the traditional melody while giving your choir an arrangement that feels both fresh and singable, perfect for programs that need a Christmas piece with genuine character without excessive difficulty.

What to expect

Intimate and reflective, drawing on the carol's centuries-old roots while Moore's arrangement brings clarity and gentle sophistication to the familiar melody. The voicing creates warmth without heaviness, letting the traditional text and tune speak naturally.

Who it's for

Choirs performing Christmas concerts who want something more layered than a basic arrangement but still accessible to singers of mixed experience. The piece works equally well in church, school, and community settings.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the melody against any instrumental parts available. The arrangement should support your singers, not compete with them.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment to establish the harmonic foundation and tempo during rehearsals, especially when introducing the piece.
  • Pay attention to Moore's voicing choices in the inner parts. They often unlock the arrangement's warmth and color, so give those lines equal weight in early run-throughs.

How to use it

Program this as a centerpiece in your Christmas portion of a concert, particularly effective when paired with more contemporary or upbeat carols. It settles an audience into the season thoughtfully and offers a strong solo or feature moment if your arrangement includes that opportunity.

Skills your students will build

  • Blend and balance across voice parts
  • Sustaining tone and phrasing in traditional choral writing
  • Listening to harmonic movement beneath the melody line
