More about this title

About the Composer: Jill Gallina

Jill Gallina

Jill Gallina, alongside her husband Michael, has built a career composing music and musical theater specifically for young singers across K-12 settings. Her work has earned recognition from the Parents Choice Foundation, American Library Service, and ASCAP, and has appeared on platforms ranging from The Disney Channel to PBS to The New York Philharmonic. Before dedicating herself fully to composition, she taught elementary school music, giving her direct insight into what works in classrooms and rehearsals.

The Gallinas' catalog has circulated in the millions, with their musical plays performed thousands of times annually worldwide. Both hold degrees from the College of New Jersey; Jill earned her B.A. in music there, while Michael completed both a master's degree in music and a doctorate in administration and supervision from Rutgers. They continue to lead educator workshops and inspire music teachers internationally through compositions that engage, enlighten, and entertain.

Why we love this

Gallina writes choral music that genuinely sits well for young voices without sacrificing musicality or charm. This octavo captures the warmth of a seasonal celebration while remaining accessible enough that rehearsal time can focus on expression rather than technical hurdles. The three-part voicing gives middle school and early high school choirs room to grow without overwhelming less experienced singers.

What to expect

Warm and celebratory, with a genuine sense of joy that doesn't rely on excessive complexity to be moving. The three-part texture creates richness while keeping each voice's role clear and singable.

Who it's for

Middle school and early high school choirs looking for accessible yet quality seasonal repertoire. This works equally well for festival performances, winter concerts, or choir students developing their ensemble skills.

How to get the most out of it

  • Pay attention to the text setting: Gallina's phrasing typically supports the natural rhythm of the words, so your singers' diction will feel conversational rather than stilted when you honor the melodic line.
  • Balance the parts by listening for the melody line in context; with three voices, one part often carries primary weight, and identifying that will clarify what singers need to hear from their neighbors.
  • Maintain forward momentum through the piece. Even in quieter passages, keep the pulse alive so the arrangement doesn't feel static.

How to use it

Slot this into a holiday concert where you want something contemporary and uplifting that appeals to general audiences. It pairs naturally with either traditional carols or other secular seasonal pieces, giving you flexibility in how you frame your winter programming.

Skills your students will build

  • Balancing three independent vocal lines while maintaining phrase integrity
  • Text expression in a seasonal context
  • Part independence without sacrificing blend
  • Reading and performing octavo-level mixed voicing
