About the Composer: David Lantz III

David Lantz III teaches vocal music full time in a Pennsylvania public school while maintaining an extraordinarily active composing practice. His catalog includes roughly 500 published works with major American publishers, spanning sacred choral music, secular choral works, orchestral and band writing, jazz ensemble pieces, and chamber music.
Beyond composition, Lantz works as a music editor and engraver, directs church choirs, and performs regularly as a bassist and vocalist in pop and jazz settings. He lives in northeastern Pennsylvania with his wife, composer Marti Lunn Lantz, and their five musical children.
Why we love this
Lantz's setting finds profound restraint in its approach to this text. Rather than sweeping drama, he builds meaning through careful harmonic choices and transparent textures that let the words carry their weight. The Choral Instrumental Pak format gives you flexibility in how you voice and accompany it, making this accessible whether you have full orchestration available or prefer a leaner sound.
What to expect
The music settles into quiet territory, with harmonies that feel both familiar and slightly unsettled. There's an ache in the sound, built not through minor keys alone but through careful voice leading that creates gentle dissonance and resolution. The overall effect is meditative and somber, inviting both singers and listeners into genuine reflection.
Who it's for
This works for any ensemble capable of singing in parts during a contemplative context. It pairs well with Good Friday services, Tenebrae settings, or concert programming centered on spiritual reflection and loss.
How to get the most out of it
- Resist the urge to rush the pacing. The contemplative mood depends on space and breath between phrases. Your tempo choice in rehearsal matters more than hitting a specific metronome marking.
- Bring out the harmonic shifts that underscore key moments in the text. They're written with intention, and singers will feel the meaning when those changes land clearly.
- Balance the instrumental accompaniment so it supports rather than overwhelms the choir. This piece invites listeners into a moment of reflection, not spectacle.
How to use it
Save this for a moment when your program needs to shift into reverence. It's ideal as a centerpiece for a Good Friday service or as a profound closing statement in a concert built around themes of spiritual journeying. Its concise duration (around two minutes fifty seconds) fits perfectly into larger liturgical contexts without derailing the arc of a service.
Skills your students will build

- Interpreting text through musical nuance rather than volume
- Balancing ensemble blend in contemplative settings
