It Don't Mean a Thing...: Percussion Ensemble

For six players. The piece has nothing to do with Ellington or the '30s jazz -- except to "swing," with as much raw, almost vicious power as players can muster. Based on the sound and martial spirit of the Japanese Taiko ensemble, the role of the "O-Daiko" (the Great Drum) is taken by the bass drum -- a drill sergeant throughout. Instrumentation: 6 timpani, 18" susp. cymbal, snare drum (4), tenor drum, 5 temple blocks, 4 concert tom-toms (high), 16" susp. cymbal (2), bongos, 4 concert tom-toms (low), bass drum, 4 wood blocks, 3 brake drums, 4 roto toms.
